Anyone with DCIS with micro invasion stage 1A HER2+?

Last reply: 18 August 2011 08:46

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has stage 1a with micro invasion <5cm which is HER2+?

I am trying to decide whether to take aggressive treatment and have chemo and heceptin? My oncologist had said it is my decision and to weigh up the risks but his 'gut feeling' is not to have further treatment.

Any experience would be appreciated. Also if any of you went for a second oncologist opinion in Dublin area - who did you go to and how do you organize it?

Thank you

Hi Wall100,

You'll see from my signature below that I don't have your type(s), but if I had your dilemma I feel I could get a referral letter from my G.P., who would understand, to consult another consultant oncologist, even briefly.

I'm in the public system, in Dublin, but in that case I'd opt to pay for at least one private consultation with another oncologist- for another opinion- just to help, and give you a few viewpoints (they may even be he same viewpoint, just expressed differently). I assume you'd get an appointment quicker in private.

And I'd probably ring a friend who work in oncology, for a name, and seek to be referred to him/her.

I don't know if you are in Dublin, but in my treatment centre in Vincents' I understand all cases are discussed by a multidisciplinary team, so your oncologist may have already sought the advice of peers and be giving you this.

Nonetheless, I do understand your need to surround this difficult decision with as much advice as you can get, so you should try, if you can.

I remember we had difficult 'do we go for chemo or do we try harvest eggs to save my fertility at an advanced age and what are the risks of both' issues to sort out, and we felt pressurized, and with poor information, so I did spend a harrowing four days seeing four doctors, and though the decision was hard, upsetting and ours to take, finally, fleshing out the picture with different doctors (often they just explain it differently, and that helps) was an important process.

Jeez, I hope this helps.

Good luck- we'll be thinking of you.

Thank you for your advise. I did get a second opinion through a friend of mine in Boston. He suggested a 'light' type of chemo and I am meeting my oncologist tomorrow to discuss my chemo options. I am attending St vincents private and my case was discussed so I guess I have got second opinions this way.

I will make a decision by the weekend I hope.

Good luck Tricia,

I won't keep hassling you Image removed. but since we share hospitals, if you PM me I can give you the name of my oncologist who also works Vincents private, or I can give you the opinion my oncologist friend gave me, regarding who to go for. That is, if you still want another...

Anyway, that's all- good luck !

(I'm off for Chemo 3, nearly halfway there, though it's no fun, oh well)

Peace
