Awaiting medical oncology appointment

Last reply: 02 April 2025 12:14

I was diagnosed with breast cancer on the 25th February with her2 positive breast cancer. Referral was sent for an appointment with medical oncology that day and I still haven't received an appointment to start chemo. The nurses in the breast clinic have been lovely but how can this be expedited. I have nodal involvement and each day that passes I'm worrying more where it can be spreading without starting treatment.

Hi there - I am sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I received mine late last November (28th). I had lumpectony in early December and did not start my chemotherapy until February 26th as there had to be a minimum of 8 weeks recovery after operation. So I am guessing you won't receive a date until a decision is made whether to have chemo before or after your lumpectony
or masecetomy. I am receiving treatment in the South - East. Hope this helps some what xx

Thanks for the reply. I was told 3 weeks ago today that I would be for chemotherapy first due to the size of the tumour and nodal involvement. I just feel this wait is cruel and unnecessary nobody ever answers phone when I try follow up and the nurses unfortunately don't have any answers when I got a call back from them. I've no one to turn to or anyone to advocate for to speed up the process I have 3 small children so to say I'm.struggling is an understatement

Dear kresc, Thank you for posting on our online forum. I am sorry to read about your diagnosis of Her2 positive breast cancer. I am sure that this is a worrying time for you, and I am glad that you have reached out for support.

An appointment with the medical oncology team may take 3-4 weeks to schedule. At your first appointment your medical oncologist and medical oncology nurse specialist (CNS) will explain what treatment is recommended, the side-effects of the treatment and will provide you with written information and contact numbers. Once you have consented to treatment, your appointment for chemotherapy will be scheduled with the Oncology Day Ward.

Please do phone us on 1800 200 700 if you would like to speak with a cancer nurse for any support, advice, or a listening ear. We are here Monday-Friday, from 0900-1700.

Kind regards, Cancer Nurse

Hey ...hope you got your answers. It's really is an awful time but trust me once things get moving it won't feel so bad.
When I had BC , also her2, I was diagnosed in August and started treatment in October. The treatment for her2 is so responsive. I also had node involvement, but I'm doing so great 5 years on. I can assure you these weeks are the toughest.. I hope you're doing OK x x
