FREEDOM

Last reply: 25 March 2013 19:57

Well girls I'm here in Lanzarote and the weather is beautiful. I brought the wig and some summer hats and apart from shielding my head from the sun I've worn none of them. I got the thumbs up from hubbie to go without. I have very little hair but enough. It felt soooo good , the freedom of feeling your hair, the little bit I have.

We then got a text from some people we know from home who are over training with their triathlon club and they wanted to meet us for a meal the other night. Ooooh quandary do I put the wig or hat on or do 'I go for it' so I went for it. They thought I looked great. Don't know what I'll do when I go home to the cold, I love my look but I would like to get a vegetable dye in as I'm grey!!! Not been able to read without glasses, plunged into the menopause & brain a mush, no not adding grey hair to that. Besides my mother is 80 and blonde, she couldn't have a grey haired daughter , wouldn't be right!!! Lol

Can I put a photo up here??

enjoy your break - you deserve it after all you've been through. My hair started growing back very grey but only the first half inch - it then started to get more of its natural colour back Image removed. hopefully yours will do the same.

God this forum is brilliant maybe I'll hang on as all be got is half an inch and it's silvery so maybe it'll get darker as it grows. My husband thinks its great as he's been grey since his 20's and he says now ill know how he feels but I didn't think I'd be that grey. I actually look like I'm heading for the concentration camp lol

Hi Wicklow Lady,

So pleased for you. I hope you have a brilliant holiday Image removed.Image removed.Image removed.

My hair did the same as Karen's and the colour came back gradually. Now it's the same colour as it used to be before chemo. Keeping my fingers crossed for you that yours will do likewise.

A year out of chemo and four haircuts later it looks and feels great and is just long enough to get into my eyes in the wind, about 4 inches.

Have a great holiday

Hugs

I'm not sure, but I think you can use an ammonia free dye! I'm sure the girls will keep you up to speed!

Hopefully not too long till I'll be asking you what to use

No neadie it won't be long please God. I dreamed of a holiday when I was in the throws of chemo can't believe I'm here.

A touching thing happened today when we were having our lunch in the hotel. A lady came over and asked me how I was and proceeded to tell me herdaughter finished treatment 10 months ago and she's doing great. She wanted to wish me well. I was nearly crying. She said she had been watching me and she wanted to say something. I felt rather special to be honest when she took my hand and wished me the best. Maybe I'll keep my hair like this lol

Yes I was nearly crying. It took the holiday to spurt me on to take wig off and I'm thrilled and my eyebrows are back I even had to pluck a few out last night, very exciting!!! Once you go out once people get used to it and you'll never go back to the wig. I look like a badger so I'll be sourcing some natural dyes this week. Great yours is growing back it's such a good feeling. You have to be a but brave to go out but we are brave women anyway so it's no problem to us

Hi Wicklow lady
I'm only reading this now so you are prob back in freezing cold Ireland. Great you had holiday and well done on dumping the wig! I dumped mine on 1st march. I couldn't stick the wig any more but my new hair was so grey I couldn't face the world with it either.
I got a dye in Roches where I got the wig. It worked perfectly. I've been very sparing on washing it as the colour will go straight down the sink but with so little hair it doesn't really need shampoo. I can pm you the name of it if you like.
I felt so weird going out with such short hair but its amazing how you get used to everything. We've had to get used to so much at this stage.

Hi Ladies,
I don't fully understand why we need to use a special dye on our new hair ??? Surely after the poison of chemo "normal dye" can't be that harmful?

Any advice before my trip to the hairdressers on Sat (so excited:):))

Well I kind of thought the same thing but they say no ammonia for six months. I think it may have to do with the sensitivity of your skin after treatment. Have to say mine is so much better with my colour in, I feel normal.

Your doing so well Mary, you only finished chemo at New Year and you have already had it coloured. Go you Image removed.

Can't wait to Saturday, surprised my hairdresser is still in business with me not going to her for 8 months Image removed.

Thanks Shirls I'm not too bad. I have my days. Just went down to mass as it was a special mass for the sick and they read a poem at the end and I ended up sniffling. I do feel so good with my own hair even if it's 'pixie' like. Yes I thought my hairdresser would go into receivership when I stopped going. I haven't gone back yet as I got my colour done in the wig place.
