Re-locating -Changing Hospitals

Last reply: 25 January 2025 00:13

Hi there,
Hope you are well.
I'm just wondering if you know where I could get information about this. I'm moving to Dublin next month but I've been to see a consultant in Cork and had a biopsy. The biopsy sample has been sent back for further testing.
I told the consultant's receptionist that I'll be moving to Dublin, she said we can discuss this at a later date. She said the biopsy results will take a few weeks and we can discuss it then.
Is there any way of finding out sooner, if it is cancer, can I be transferred to a hospital in Dublin and would there be a delay in getting treatment because of the transfer? Can I choose which hospital in Dublin ore do they choose for you?
They more or less said it was cancer, they just need to know what type.
Thank you for any advice you can give,
Angela.

Hey I had the same thing. I live in the Midlands and had to attend a hospital in either limerick, galway or dublin so the doc said she would refer to me to galway as was quicker. I had all my further tests n biopsies done in Galway and after my 2nd biopsy the doctor rang me as I was so far away and gave me the results over the phone though like yourself I was pretty much sure it was cancer. Depends also on what type of cancer they are testing for. I had cervical and I got my biopsy results after LLETZ in about 5 days. The doctors in dublin transferred me to James's, maybe by chance plus I see another doctor there. James's as far as I'm aware is a cancer of excellence in dublin though I stand corrected.
Hopefully your biopsy results come back soon, the waiting is the mist awful part x

Thanks so much for your message. I'm sorry about your diagnosis. It's good that your in James's, that's meant to be a really good hospital. I hope it's going okay for you and that you are doing well x

Hi Angela,

Thank you for posting in our ask a nurse section. I do apologise for the delay in getting back to you.

I am sorry to read that you have required a biopsy recently and are awaiting the results. It can be a difficult time waiting for results especially when you have the added concerns about changing hospitals.

Your consultant in Cork should be able to refer you to a consultant in Dublin easily. Sometimes changing from one hospital to another can incur a slight delay. It is good that you have mentioned this to them already and it may be no harm to remind the secretary again, before your next appointment. The hospital which you may be referred to in Dublin will depend on a number of factors including the type of treatment required, where you are living in Dublin and whether you will be treated in a public or private hospital. Your consultant in Cork should be able to advise you about the hospital. If you need further treatment or follow up, your Cork consultant will let you know when the best time is to transfer your care to Dublin.

Angela, if you would like to speak with one of our oncology nurses, please contact the Support Line on 1800 200 700, Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse
