Inaction is a choice: Cancer patients will suffer after being ignored in Budget 2024

Wednesday, 11th October: “Cancer patients will suffer and there is a serious risk that cancer outcomes will go backwards as a result of Government failure to invest in the National Cancer Strategy in Budget 2024,” Irish Cancer Society CEO Averil Power said today. She was reacting to a lack of investment or even a mention of cancer in the Budget.

“Ireland’s cancer outcomes are already behind other European countries. The National Cancer Strategy was designed to change that through improvements in cancer prevention, detection and treatment. Yet in a €14 billion budget package, there was no mention of the €20 million needed to deliver the National Cancer Strategy in 2024.

“As a collective, Government has chosen to ignore the needs of cancer patients and their families by choosing to let the National Cancer Strategy go another year without any additional funding. Cancer patients will suffer as a result and there is a real risk that outcomes will go backwards”, she concluded.
