Army of Daffodil Day volunteers take to the streets to support cancer patients

Over 5,000 volunteers turned out in force for the Irish Cancer Society’s flagship fundraising day to raise crucial funds for cancer patients.

Some 700,000 daffodil pins and 300,000 fresh daffodils went on sale in a bid to raise almost €4m to provide free services and fund lifesaving cancer research.

Head of Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society, Mark Mellett said, “We are so thankful to our fantastic volunteers, who have turned out in force for us once again, and the public who have generously donated already. It is still too early to say how Daffodil Day 2018 has performed, or if wet weather in the South and East of the country will impact on donations locally, but our early indications are positive.

“Only two per cent of our funding comes from the State. We are therefore hugely dependent on the generosity of the public on Daffodil Day to fund crucial services like Night Nursing for terminally ill cancer patients. It’s not too late to donate at www.cancer.ie Your support will ensure we can continue to provide vital care to those in need.”

Daffodil Day, the Society’s longest running collection day in the country, is proudly supported by Boots Ireland. Colleagues in all 86 stores around Ireland got involved by holding cyclathons, bake sales and raffles to raise funds.

Bernadette Lavery, Managing Director, Boots Ireland added, “Colleagues across our 86 Boots stores in Ireland have been so enthusiastic in their support for Daffodil Day. Every store got involved in raising vital funds and we would like to thank our customers for their support. We see the effect cancer has on the lives of patients and families in the communities we serve, and we are determined to make a difference.”
