With almost one in three Irish women smoking, and one in two younger and more disadvantaged women addicted to tobacco, the Irish Cancer Society today called for action to tackle what the Society is calling a smoking epidemic among Irish women.
Kathleen O'Meara, Head of Advocacy and Communications of the Irish Cancer Society, made the following opening statement to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children Public Hearings on the Public Health (Standardised Packaging of Tobacco) Bill 2013.
I had a biopsy on July 20th, which showed grade 2, Her2 positive cancer, stage 2.
Since then - nothing has happened... I am waiting.
