Today, May 18th is European Cancer Nursing Day- a day to recognise and celebrate the positive impact that nurses have on the quality of cancer care across Europe! To mark the day, Caroline O' Sullivan an Irish Cancer Society Support Line nurse speaks about her role and what it means to her.

The Irish Cancer Support Line 1800 200 700  is a confidential and free service where people can call and speak to a cancer nurse with questions and concerns about cancer. We are open Monday to Friday, 9 – 5. People can also email questions and concerns to supportline@cancer.ie

As Support Line nurses, we offer a confidential listening ear and provide support and reassurance to people. We help cancer patients and their families to access the help they need- this could be anything from dealing with a diagnosis ,advice on caring for someone with cancer or how to help with some of the emotional,  practical and financial impacts of a cancer diagnosis. On so many occasions people have said that it was just so good to talk and not feel alone. People are often so relieved at being able to access support services and programmes offered by the Irish Cancer Society as well the knowledge of how to access community supports. We also speak to people concerned about signs or symptoms of cancer and cancer awareness.

Getting a cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming , it can be a lonely place, and everybody reacts differently to a diagnosis in their life.

Some feel angry or sad, others feel helpless or worried. Many people worry about how to tell their loved ones about their diagnosis. Others can be lost for words as they may not know how to speak to a loved one who has been diagnosed. Everyone’s feelings are valid and talking can help and be the first step.

We are here for people no matter what stage of their cancer journey they’re at.

Often, it’s when people finish up their treatment that they realise they need support, and we are there then too.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, it can be helpful to talk about it, whether that be with a friend or family member, or call the Support Line to speak with one of our cancer nurses. The important thing to know is that you’re not alone, support is out there, and we are only a phone call away.

It is a privilege to work as an Irish Cancer Society nurse and to support people affected by cancer across Ireland.
