“It can be scary doing something you’ve never done before, but it’s for a great cause and there’s such a fantastic community of Irish Streamers taking part”

We spoke with Conor, aka PhantomSquidge, to find out why he is fundraising for Daffodil Day by getting involved in Heroes From Home 2023, here is what he told us:

  • Why are you taking part in heroes from home?
I’m taking part in Heroes From Home to raise funds and awareness for Cancer research and care in Ireland.
  • Is there anything in particular that motivates you about supporting the Irish Cancer Society?
Like many families in Ireland and around the world, cancer has affected my family greatly. My Grandfather, among many other health complications near the end of his life, suffered from kidney cancer. One of my cousins, who is only 34, has been battling an aggressive brain tumour for the last 3 years, and my other cousin’s partner, who is only 38, was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma only in January of this year.
I want to support the Irish Cancer Society in whatever way I can so that I can help not only my family - but also other families across Ireland who are suffering through a similar experience.
  • Is this your first time taking part?
It is, and I’m really excited about it!
  • What will you be doing to take part/ how are you fundraising?
I’ll be fundraising and raising awareness for the Irish Cancer Society by streaming over on Twitch! I’ll be playing Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy, a very frustrating game where you must drag yourself up a massive junk mountain using nothing but a sledgehammer, and I’ll also be doing my first ever collab stream with some other Irish Streamers where we’ll be playing Among Us! There will be a variety of donation milestones and incentives running during the streams, and every €10 raised during the Getting Over It streams will reset the game.. yes, I do hate myself, why do you ask? Additionally, if we manage to beat Getting Over It (which is HIGHLY unlikely), I have another secret game planned!

  • How can others get involved and watch your fundraiser?
My Heroes From Home live streams will be taking place on Sunday, March 19th, Monday, March 20th, and Tuesday, March 21st.
All taking place from 6 pm to 10 pm GMT over on my Twitch channel, a link to which you can find over at https://koji.to/PhantomSquidge With the special collab stream taking place on March 20th!
  • What would you say to others who are thinking about taking part?
If you’re thinking about taking part but are still on the fence, my advice is to just take the plunge and go for it! It can be scary doing something you’ve never done before, but it’s for a great cause and there’s such a fantastic community of Irish Streamers taking part that are all here to help and support each other, and we would love for you to join us!
  • What are your top tips for running a gaming fundraiser?
I’m not too experienced with this, as I have not been streaming on Twitch for a year yet myself, but from what I’ve picked up over the last few months, I would say that one of the best things you can do is to turn your fundraising stream into some sort of event rather than just going live and doing your normal thing with a donation goal set up in the corner.
For example, I did a birthday celebration stream the other week for my 23rd birthday, and I made a promotional graphic for it that I posted on my social media, and then during the stream, I sang some songs with my guitar, built some Lego and then played some community games with my viewers.
All of these are things that I only do occasionally, so when I do them it’s something different and interesting for me and my viewers, and it adds a bit of magic to the stream in the sense that it’s more than just going live and playing a game or doing whatever it is that I usually do. My analytics back this up too, as the viewership for my birthday stream was quite a bit higher than normal!
