Funding Success for the All Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI)

Awards under the HEA North-South Research Programme were announced by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Minister Simon Harris on Wednesday 2nd March 2022, which included key funding for the All-Island Cancer Research Institute (AICRI).

Supported by the Irish Government's Shared Island Fund, over €37 million euro was awarded, with over one third of the funding going to cancer research projects. In particular, an award of €4 million euro was given for AICRIstart, a 4 year research programme providing advanced training in precision cancer medicine for 10 doctoral students and 10 post-doctoral fellows across 10 academic institutions on the island of Ireland.

Led by Prof. William Gallagher at University College Dublin, together with investigators at 9 other academic institutions, the AICRIstart programme will create a unique all-island partnership of scale in cancer research. AICRIstart is a key foundation stone for the overall AICRI vision to establish an overarching framework for cancer research covering cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship/quality of life.

Additional significant funding related to AICRI was also secured for hubs of excellence in the cancer data and liquid biopsy arenas, led by Prof. Aedin Culhane (University of Limerick) and Prof. Lorraine O'Driscoll (Trinity College Dublin) respectively. The AICRIstart programme itself will begin later this year and run for a 4 year period.
