Free Irish Cancer Society programme helps over 100 Cork women quit smoking

Registrations for spring 2020 We Can Quit courses now open

A free Irish Cancer Society programme that has helped over 100 women in Cork quit smoking will commence its spring round of courses for 2020 later this month.

The We Can Quit programme provides women with weekly group sessions and one-to-one support on stopping smoking over 12 weeks, along with nicotine replacement therapy, all free of charge.

The spring 2020 courses will begin at Lotamore FRC in Mayfield at 6.30pm on 25th February and Ballyphehane/Togher Community Development Project at 7pm on 2nd March. Any women interested in taking part can register online at: www.cancer.ie/cancer-information-and-support/cancer-prevention/smoking/we-can-quit/register_for_we_can_quit.

Eimear Cotter, Community Cancer Prevention Officer at the Irish Cancer Society, said: “Over the last four years almost 200 women have completed We Can Quit courses in Cork, and over half of those ladies quit smoking at the end. The programme continues to grow in Cork each year and our research has shown this programme works.”

She added: “The programme offers free nicotine replacement therapy and a friendly network of like-minded women, who know they have the full support of their community and the Irish Cancer Society behind them.”

Research has shown that smokers who use a combination of group support and two nicotine replacement products for a 12-week period are four times more likely to quit and stay smoke-free for good.

We Can Quit is run in partnership with the HSE, local community organisations and local pharmacies. The programme is open to all female smokers living in Ballyphehane, Mayfield and Togher and surrounding areas who are over the age of 18 years and are interested in quitting smoking.
