Hi there, my dad has been told that the cancer has spread to other places and is not curable. He is losing weight rapidly and losing interest in most things. I'm just looking for advice on what I can do to help make his days bearable. Some days he stays in bed and I'm trying to find ways to show him we care and bring some enjoyment to his day. New to this so open to all suggestions. Thank you
Hi Annette,
I’m very sorry to read that your father has been diagnosed with advanced cancer. This must be very difficult for your father, yourself and your family. Weight loss can occur for a number of reasons such as nausea, decreased appetite, swallowing difficulties or from emotional reasons related to cancer. It may be helpful to speak to his medical team about his weight loss, they may refer your dad to a dietician for tailored advice. We have information about weight loss on our website that may be helpful.
It must be very distressing to see your father losing interest, as well as a physical impact, a cancer diagnosis has a huge emotional impact. Simply by being there and asking how he is a great support. You can speak with your dad and let him know that you are there to listen if he wants to talk. I have attached a link here with our website with further information about how to support your dad. Our booklet ‘Lost for words’ may also be helpful. There is counselling available for your father, yourself and other family members free of charge through local cancer support groups or through our remote counselling service.
Please do not hesitate to contact us on 1800 200 700 if you would like to speak with a nurse for any advice or support. We are open 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday.
Kind regards,
Cancer nurse.
