Stress dealing with my wife's cancer

Last reply: 25 August 2022 14:22

Hello...first post!
My wife is in the middle of phase 1 chemo for Leukaemia.
She is six weeks into the treatment.
I was doing well initially, occupying myself with housework etc.,
But last weekend, I hit a wall......it just crept up on me.
I went from sleeping well to having a lot of difficulty....
I've tried sleeping tablets or relaxants, but no joy so far....
Plenty of pain/stomach aches etc., and feeling very anxious...
Just wondering if anyone else here has had these symptoms,
and any suggestions to break this cycle....
Many thanks for any help that can be offered
Andy

Andy, my wife, had AML ( Acute Myeloid Leukaemia ) and is now in excellent health three years after her stem cell transplant. I found daily meditation a great way to deal with stress. Check out the headspace program on Netflix, and I recommend

• The Headspace Guide to Meditation & Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe

I use the headspace app, and I have a paid-for account. I find it well worth it.

Another great read is

• Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Finding Peace in a Frantic World by J. Mark G. Williams, Danny Penman

Hi Andy,

I am sorry to read that your wife was diagnosed with Leukaemia. I do hope that she is tolerating her chemotherapy ok.

The emotional impact of cancer does not just impact the person diagnosed, it can also have quite an impact on any of their loved ones. If you would like to speak with one of our cancer nurses, please contact the Support Line on 1800 200 700, Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. We could advise you of other services, such as counselling, which may be available to you.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse
