Hair loss in kids

Last reply: 25 June 2023 17:31

Hi
my son who is 6 is receiving chemo and his hair has started to come out - would anyone recommend any child friendly books I could read with him or give to his teacher to read with his classmates to explain this for him and make it more 'normal' for him
thanks

Hi Doireannf, I’m so sorry your son has to go through that, I don’t have any direct experience regarding the childrens books but here is a site that has some recommendations: https://cancer.livebetterwith.com/blogs/cancer/childrens-books-about-ca…

I hope someone more useful checks in soon with other advice.

Wishing you, your son and all your family well x

Hi Doireann,

Thank you for posting to our Online Community.

I am sorry to hear that your son is receiving chemotherapy and will lose his hair. I do hope he is tolerating it well and doing ok. It must be a very difficult time for you all.

Our children’s cancer coordinator recommended the following book Anna loses her hair from the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Group. There is also an animation of this here https://youtu.be/c2fB-jpR6BQ which may be helpful for his teacher and classmates to watch.
If you would like any further information or support you can speak with a nurse on our Support Line on 1800 200 700 Mon to Fri 9am to 5pm.

Kind Regards,

Cancer Nurse

I'm really sorry to hear that your son is going through chemotherapy at such a young age. Explaining the situation to him and his classmates in a child-friendly and compassionate way can be helpful in normalizing his experience and fostering understanding and support among his peers.
