Hi All,
I’m in the middle of chemo at the moment. I was diagnosed with appendix cancer in June this year. It has spread to my ovaries, peritoneum and bowel. I’m doing relatively ok but I look forward to my operation, hopefully early next year. I’m looking forward to talking to others going through this journey, it’s a lonely road. Good wishes to everyone out there who's doing or has done the journey

Eileen

Hi EileenCY, hope your chemo is going smoothly. I had a different type of cancer, breast cancer, and yes it is a lonely journey. There are lots of online forums, and I keep meaning to call the Irish Cancer phone line as they have peer support, have you tried that? I worked as much as possible throughout (which wasn’t the best idea) and find it hard to get time alone to call. Hopefully others will add to the comments here and help to make the journey a little less lonely x

Hi EIleen

I’m new myself to this forum was diagnosed April 2020 with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer at 45, the chemo can be tough with the side effects but take 1 day at a time , I spoke to a counsellor from the cancer society and found it great to let some emotions out mostly anger you didn’t mention if you have family or friends around you if you have lean on them during treatment I found they want to help they are just not sure how or what to do all you need to do is ask , I returned to work one month after my last chemo but continued to get targeted therapy every 3 weeks, if I had it over again I would not have gone back full time I hope this helps good luck with treatment

Dear Eileen

Thank you for posting on our online community.

I am very sorry to hear all that you are going through. It can for sure feel like a very lonely road. The suggestions the other ladies posted would very much be there for you too. There are some specific online support websites plus some cancer support centres will have specific support group meetings you might find supportive at this time. For certain you could avail of our counselling service and we have cancer nurses both here on our support line and in our Daffodil Centres which are in many of the hospitals around the country. If you would like specific advice around preparing for your surgery physically we can refer you to our colleague on our community support team who specialises in diet and exercise pre and post treatment.

I do hope we hear from you Eileen and we wish you and the other ladies ‘lotusflower’ and ‘louise12’ our best wishes. If phoning our support line at 1800 200 700 is inconvenient you can always email us at supportline@irishcancer.ie

Kind regards

Cancer Nurse
