Hi there,

I hope you get some replies soon.

“To qualify you for a Disability Allowance you must  have an injury, disease, physical or mental disability, that has continued or may be expected to continue for at least one year”

You may be able to claim Disability Payment if your cancer diagnosis affects your everyday life. For example, doing household jobs and caring for yourself, or getting around.

I have attached the link for the application here: gov.ie - Disability Allowance Application Form (DA1) (www.gov.ie)

The social worker attached to the hospital you are being treated in or your local Citizens advice bureau will be best placed to advise you and help you with your application.

The Irish Cancer Society have a team who can advise about financial and entitlement issues, called the Financial and Practical Supports team. They may be able to assist and guide you to what benefits you can apply for.

I have also attached a link to our advice and benefits and entitlements here: https://www.cancer.ie/cancer-information-and-support/cancer-support/ben…

Our phone number is 1800 200 700. We are here Mon- Fri 9-5pm if you would like to discuss this further.

Kind regards

Cancer Nurse

Thank you for your reply. It seems spending precious time and effort applying for Disability Allowance would be fruitless given the rule:

“To qualify you for a Disability Allowance you must have a disease that has continued or may be expected to continue for at least one year”

Oh dear. So terminal stage 4 metastatic cancer diagnosed one month ago would not qualify if life expectancy is less than a year! Especially if one is mobile and active.
