Last reply: 04 May 2012 11:20

Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone had experienced an allergic reaction to their chemo I just had chemo for the first time on tuesday and I had a reaction straight away I began to feel a tightness in the chest and a redding and swelling of the throat and it was very alarming allthoughh the staff were great and it was stopped stright away. I am trying again tomorrow on a lesser dose for a trial short time so im hoping it goes better I feel I want to get started as soon as possible

Hi Jean,

Sorry to hear you had a scary first experience of chemo. What chemo are you on? Are they giving you steroids? Or any other medication to help counteract a reaction?

I guess it was yesterday (Thurs 25th) you were trying the reduced dose. Hope it went better. Let us know.

Regards,

Flo.

Hi Jean,

I had my first Chemo session about 10 days ago, I remember the Doctor telling about the possible side effects as they were doing the anti-sickness meds. He said 1 in 25,000 people experiance a heart attack,,,,,, and of course I happen to be Muppet number 25,000,,,,, about 3 minutes into the actual Chemo I went into Cardiac Arrest. Fortunately the Doctor and nurses present were right on the ball and managed to sort things out very quickly so it worked out ok, although I sure dont fancy that happening again, bloody scary experiance. My chemo session lasted about 7 hours. It certainly knocked the stuffing out of me for the next week and I totally lost my appetite, I'm just starting to get back to normal now but still get very tired and whereas before the Chemo I would usually sleep 4 or 5 hours a night, 9 to 10 hours sleep is now the norm. It affects different people in different ways, eg, my Fiance had cervical cancer, she would have a chemo session in the morning and we would go out dancing that same evening, sadly she passed away two and a half years ago, followed by my Mum 8 days later from Lymphoma and lung cancer. The day after we buried Mum, my Dad's brother died from bowel cancer,,, and 7 months ago my Dad was diagnosed with stomach cancer, so I suppose I'm just keeping up the family tradition Image removed.

I had a reaction to taxol. Breathing went and tingling in my lips and went very red my daughter said. the nurses acted very quickly and injected an antihystemine and something else and gave me oxygen. I was fine after a while but it was scary. They since upped steroids before and administer the drug slower. all went well again. best of luck.
