Hi I have to go and get a breast check done. Really worried as there is a history of cancer in my family does anyone know how long the wait is now for a check with the corona virus and is there a big difference between public and private waiting times.

Hi Irene,

It is understandable and common to feel worried when going for a breast check, especially with a family history of cancer.  I’m not sure from your post if you are to attend the breast check screening service or if your GP has referred you to a symptomatic breast clinic after they examined you for a change in your breast.  If you are attending the screening service routine breast screening is resuming nationwide this week, invites are being sent out to eligible women for screening appointments dated from 08 March 2021, we would suggest to contact breast check directly on 1800 45 45 55.  If your GP has referred you to a symptomatic breast clinic, the referral will be assessed by a member of the team.  Based on this assessment and the hospital that it was sent to, wait times may vary, your GP may have further information about this and may also be able to advise about private services.  Please don’t hesitate to call our support line on 1800 200 700 to speak with a cancer nurse in more detail.

Kind regards,

Cancer nurse.
