Hello, my mother was just diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. She is starting hormonal therapy tomorrow. Any advice on how I can help ease her worries and anxieties and my own!? Is there anything I can tell her to prepare for possible side effects? Thanks in advance. It’s a worrying time

Dear Miriam,

I’m so sorry to read about your mothers diagnosis of secondary breast cancer, this must have been an awful shock for you all.  When starting treatment for cancer, it is understandably a very anxious time when you are told what the side effects may be, many women would feel the same.  It is important to try take things day by day and if your mother does have any side effects there are strategies to try manage them.  I have attached a link here to our website with more information about hormone therapy and side effects.

If your mum would like to speak with another lady with secondary breast cancer we have a peer support service available that may be helpful for her.  We have also recently initiated a telephone counselling service for anyone affected by cancer including your mum and your family.  If you would like to know more about these services or to speak with a cancer nurse for any advice or support, please call us on 1800 200 700,
