Biopsy Resultd

Last reply: 23 October 2020 16:32

Hi there,
I’m hoping someone can help me. I had surgery almost 4 weeks ago to remove a tumor from my abdomen. No biopsy was done in advance as it was growing quickly and consultant didn’t want to delay removal. I was told to expect results within a week. To date nothing... I was updated that they are waiting for the immunohistopathology results before report completed but that was over a week ago. Has anyone experienced similar delays? And, if so, how long? Thanks so much.

Hi

I am so sorry you are going through this very anxious time. It must be so difficult not knowing any details or your treatment plan.

It does happen that results take longer than expected. Length of time for results or delay in getting results usually means that your team want more information. In some cases samples have to be sent to a different lab to, for example look at the proteins in a tissue sample. Sometimes the specialist might want a second opinion on the results or sometimes one test result might mean that your specialist requests another test.  With all of this information they will then want to discuss them with the multi-disciplinary team so that when they meet with you they have concluded their investigations and discussions and have a plan in place. If you know the liaison nurse on this team you could ring her to discuss further and hopefully she will have an appointment date for you.

Meanwhile waiting and dealing with uncertainty is very hard. You must have many questions going around in your head-do keep a pen and paper near you to write these down for your team. If you phone our support line and speak to a cancer nurse we can help you with these questions and support you at this time. Our number is 1800 200 700 & we are here Mon-Fri.9-5pm

Kind regards

Cancer Nurse
