Tmoxifen

Last reply: 27 August 2021 14:08

Hi, i started tamoxifen on July 4th, so I'm almost 2 month into it, i had my last period on the 7th of August and today it seemed like i got it again, or at least I'm hoping is my period and not just a random bleeding. I was diagnosed with stage 1a bc in April, had a lumpectomy and slnb which were clear.i have seen all my doctor's in the last couple of month and it seemed that everything was fine.my gynecologist suggested a total hysterectomy with dual oophorectomy, which i am considering because he said the bleedings will happen.i guess my question is if this is something that i need to address right away because the tamoxifen is already doing damages or should I wait because my periods will be irregular for a while?thank you

Hi Claudia,

Thank you for posting your story and I am very sorry to read about your diagnosis and I hope that you are recovering well since your lumpectomy and that you are not having too many side effects from Tamoxifen.  It is reassuring that you have seen all your doctors in the last couple of months and that’s everything is fine.

For women who are still menstruating, Tamoxifen can cause changes such as irregular cycles or your periods may become lighter or stop.  Although these changes are known to occur, we would recommend contacting the breast care nurse in the hospital where you have had your surgery to discuss the changes to your cycle.  They may advise that these changes are ok or they may decide to link in with your gynaecologist.

I have attached general information here about tamoxifen and side effects that you may find helpful.  Please don’t hesitate to call our Support line on 1800 200 700 if you would like to speak with a cancer nurse about your situation.

Kind regards,

Cancer nurse.
