Hi Kim,

This is obviously a worrying thing for you, and as a mother, I would definitely want you to come and tell me what was going on. If you’re worried about being shy to speak to your mam about the lump, you could give her a note to explain, and to tell her how you feel. If there’s some particular reason you don’t want to approach your mam, and remember, your mam might have had a similar issue, maybe there’s another family member who could help you?

If you are concerned about the consultation with a doctor, if your mam thinks it’s necessary, then don’t, because while I remember being embarrassed with my first trip to my doctor as a 12-year old with problematic periods (imagine that examination with your mother in the room!) you’ll realise that doctors see so many people with so many different issues that they’re bound to have seen this before. They will put your mind at ease or take whatever action is necessary to sort you out. Your mam would be able to stay in the room with you if you wished, and if you wanted, she could be outside the curtain. I hope you tell your mam, and explain your fears, but the most important thing is that you talk to a female adult who can help you.

Good luck, Kym.
Emma
