Birthmark Change

Last reply: 26 February 2022 00:43

Hi, I have a very large birthmark on my leg which up until last December had no change. Then I got a black mark on it which then turned into an ulceration. My GP sent an urgent referral as he reckons I have 4 out of 5 characteristics of melanoma. I got my appointment within 4 weeks which is the 14th of this month with the dermatologist but I was wondering what to expect at the appointment. It is an extremely large birthmark so would the call me back to biopsy it?
Thanks everyone x

Hi Lolliec123,

Thank you for posting on the Online Community.

I am sorry to learn that you have noticed changes and ulceration to your birthmark.

I am glad to hear that you have an appointment with the Dermatologist soon. What will happen at the appointment will often be dictated by the referral letter sent by your GP and your clinical examination on the day. You might find it helpful to contact the Dermatology clinic and ask if they intend to perform a biopsy on that date.

If you would like to speak with a cancer nurse in more detail please contact our Support Line on 1800 200 700, Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Kind regards,

Cancer Nurse

Hi Thank you for your reply. I will do that tomorrow as I didn’t realise you could do something like that.
Thank you again

Hi there
Just wondering how you got on? I really hope you are OK. I recently noticed a small black mark on my daughters brown birthmark on her knee. I'll be phoning our gp on Monday.
