Weekly taxol : which days will be worst

Last reply: 19 June 2014 22:04

I got off lightly on the 4 AC, only had a couple of very bad days each cycle. The prospect of 12 weekly taxol is a bit daunting. I'll be starting this Thursday and have 10 steroids to take Wednesday night and then whatever they give me as pre-meds. I wonder could anyone give me any insight as to when I will come crashing down from the steroids and how long a "low" might last? And when any other side effects are likely to kick in. I have 3 little kids and not much help as husband works really long hours but up until now I've managed very well with a few dig outs from neighbours and parents. I could ask for extra help but actually prefer to do things myself unless I really am in a bad way.
Thanks in advance

Hi Mardi,

I had taxol every three weeks so a different regime to you but I found taxol a walk in the park compared to AC. I felt almost human Image removed.

Certainly the steroids kept me buzzing for days and I was full of beans. I don't remember having bad days from the taxol chemo, rather down days when the steroids wore off and I was on less of a high!!

Hopefully all the steroids over the 12 weeks will have you flying and your children will have a challenge keeping up with you!

Good luck,

LindyLu

Hi Mardi

I too have just finished 4 AC and am starting 12 weekly taxol on 6th June I seem to be slightly different than you in that I have to take 6 steroids previous evening and then 6 before I have my infusion. I would also like to know what to expect from taxol as I did have some bad side effects from AC and am glad to have finished it. I am getting a bit apprehensive about what to expect from taxol. Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated. Good luck with the rest of your treatment lets hope we get through it relatively unscathed. Love the human bit Lindylu that's what I'm hoping for seems like a while since then. Image removed.

Thanks for that, Lindylu, you are selling the drugs well!
Just about to take the steroids now (trying to choke down some food first) and feeling jittery as hell! I wasn't anyway as nervous before starting the AC....

10 steroids if me, Anng. I will be climbing the walls later, that's if I manage to get them down me.
I will let you know how I get on sometime over next few days.

Mardi, I have to take all my drugs now with a bit of food, cant swallow them any more after all the drugs I threw into myself during chemo! A corner of bread or a quarter of a cracker is usually enough...I think it was the size of the Emend Anti Nausea drug that sent me over the edge!

The very odd person gets an alergic reaction to Taxol (I did!) but the weekly regieme means lower dosage and therefore less liklihood of an adverse reaction as far as I know (I was every three weeks). To counteract the reaction I was put on EVEN MORE steroids and antihistamines and the dose was administered over 2-3 hours instead of an hour!

Good luck tomorrow, you should be fine.

It was totally grand, but really slow, was in there from 10.45 until 4pm! Hope they're not all so long or I can write off Thursdays for the rest of the Summer.
I feel pretty normal right now.

Hi Mardi;
Glad that your first Taxol went well - first days are usually the longest because they ensure that there are no adverse reactions to it. You should fly it, keep an eye on the nails and if there is any funny feeling in your fingers or feet, make sure to tell the doctor.

Hoping that everything else goes good for you x

Hi Mardi, glad to hear your Taxol went well. I completed my 12 weeks on 25 March and it was fine for the most part. Just remember that Taxol is cumulative so by week 10-12 you might be very tired (I was) but it was so much easier than AC for me. I didn't have to take steroids orally but I did get it as an infusion just before my weekly Taxol which was much easier for me (might be worth asking?).

Best of luck.. Image removed.

Just done number 4 and I can't believe how easy it has been so far. I don't have a bad day at all. I get the infusion of steroids just before as well as the dose of pills described for the night before but the super dose was just for two weeks and I followed it up with a sleeping tablet and a Xanax and slept grand.
The big doses of steroids made my face blotchy but it cleared up within a day and didn't hurt.
The only worry was that I got the neuropathy in my fingers the day after the first one so was a tiny bit terror stricken that I wouldn't make it to T12 without permanent damage but it cleared up before the 2nd and did not get any worse after T2 and T3. I actually think I had LESS symptoms after no. 3! I started taking a few supplements that are thought may be helpful and did a bit of exercise in the days after treatment as it's thought that may help work chemo out of the body. Don't know which (if either) helped or whether it was a case of 3rd time lucky....
Thanks for all your encouragement and insight
Half way through chemo. I know it will be tougher at the end but seeing as the 4 big ones are done and only 8 taxol are left I feel it is a legitimate halfway point and a bit of bubbly is called for this weekend!!!

Wait 'til you see all the meds you have to take after your AC! It's only for a few days each cycle, though.
All the best for next week !
