Taxol steroids

Last reply: 20 March 2014 18:25

Hi all
I'm due to start taxol tomorrow and just picked up my steroid prescription but slightly confused about it. The note I received said to take 10 tablets tonight with a stomach tablet but there are another 20 steroids on the script and I seem to have to split them up into groups of 8, 6, 4 and 2. I'll ring the nurse and ask but in the meantime am I meant to take these on Fri, Sat, Sun & Mon nights or before the next few taxol sessions? Any advice on the best time to take these? Should I also expect to be awake half the night?
Thanks
Pamela

Best to check with the nurse. I never took any before my chemo but I took them for the 4/5 days after. I slept like a log while on chemo. [color=#4000BF:1j7lfx2t]Best of luck xxx[/color:1j7lfx2t]

Hi Newtothis

I hope you got ok with the taxol? I had taxol yesterday for the first time and had to take 20 steroids before the treatment, 10 at midnight the night before and then 10 more at 6 o clock in the morning. Thank god I didn't have any adverse reaction which I know can be a problem. My nausea seems ok too so hopefully I will get an easier ride that I did with the AC! Can I ask you or anyone else who has had biweekly taxol, are you continuing on with steroids in the days after the taxol.

Thank you
Mel

Hi Mel1,

So far I've got on fine with taxol. I had a reaction when they first administered it but they dropped the speed of the drip and then I was fine. No nausea since but Im slightly achey in my body but that could be totally unrelated. I'm on weekly taxol and I had to take 20mgs (10 tablets) the night before, I've to take another 10 tomorrow night before Fridays treatment, 8 the following Thursday night, 6 the one after that, then 4 and 2, and after that none before the remaining 6 treatments.

Hi Newtothis,

Your steroid regime is completely different to mine probably because you're getting yours weekly. I've had no real nausea either which is brilliant. I was told that I would get aches and pains after taxol and sure enough I was sore all around back and shoulder area last night in bed. I was prescribed ponson for this pain but I've just taken some panadol so far. If it gets worse I will pick up that prescription. At the minute I'm just glad I'm in way better form than I was on AC!

Hi All,

I have reached the half way stage of my weekly taxol, six to go, I only get steroid administered in hospital as part of pre meds with anti nausea. Wonder if this is why I have been feeling completely zonked the last few weeks. I did say it to the doc on the ward last week and since my last dose I have been feeling quite energised, maybe they upped the steroid dose to keep me going, cause I would say I have only had six hours sleep the last two nights, would rather it this way than going from bed to couch from week to week.
Hope all keeping well.
Georgie

The steroids do take away the slump but I don't know which is worse - being wired or being panned! I'm not on steroids after the taxol even though the nurse said to take them because of how sick I was on AC but the dr who I saw before taxol treatment said not to! Anyway I thought I'd see how I'd get on without them. Definetly very tired. At least I sleep when I go to bed! So far taxol is better for me... Hope it continues!
