Tamoxifen side effect - body odour

Last reply: 02 June 2009 21:53

I'm having trouble with a so called side effect of Tamoxifen, namely body odour - I have tried countless deodorants, includling mitchum/ vichy/ all natural products/ clarins/ deo... to no avail. I have been in contact with breast unit at Vincents but without a satisfactory answer - one person suggested I wash more frequently - which is fine except I work in an open plan office, very embarrassing and really not practical. I'm not menopausal, thankfully I don't get hot flushes but my temperature shoots up when I'm stressed and bang!! I'm in trouble. Surely someone has a cure??

Hi there Maevee,

Poor you! I am sure it is very upsetting for you. You say you are not menopausal but get hot when under pressure. This probably IS a mild hot flush caused by the Tamoxifen. Is it just that you are sweating a lot and assume you must smell to others around you? Bear in mind that, we are more aware of our own BO than others may be. Or has someone actually said something to you?

Some people swear by herbal things like Black Cohosh among others but if you have had Estrogen receptor positive Breast Cancer, it is best to avoid these supplements until more is known about them. I have been that they contain phyto estrogens which help with the flushes, etc. but might be dangerous for Est+ people to take.

What I have found helps me most is limiting certain things in my diet. Reducing alcohol intake helps but the biggest thing for me is coffee. I have found it best just to avoid it completely if I can. I am guaranteed to be 'melting' for the next 24 hours if I have a cup! I think its the caffeine. I would also try keeping a fan on your desk in work if you can, or a mini hand one to help you keep cool.

Someone I know also recommends a some special deodorant made from a crystal that they use? Don't have any personal knowledge of this one though.

Hope you find something to help you.
Regards,

Flo.

Hi Maeveeee and FH2,
I am also on tamoxofin and phew, bang too with the ''hots'' !!
However, I seem to have odour free perspiration since I had my
mastectomy, chemo and now tamoxofin !!
The deodrant I use is Pit Rok - this can be got in crystal form but
I prefer the pump spray version - you can spray some and rub it around.
It works by supressing bacterial growth and does not contain alcohol,
perfume or aluminium chlorohydrate.... and it doesnt block pores.

Before my diagnosis I used use lots of anti-perspirant/deodorants
but I am totally pleased with pit rok now.
It should be available in all good health food shops.

Roxanne.

Hi Roxanne

Thank you for the above, with the weather this weekend, seriously in need of a little help so I'll check out Pit Rok and fingers crossed - I appreciate your response. Maeve
