Skin care during radiotherapy

Last reply: 06 May 2020 16:36

I had a partial mastectomy on 18th March. Thankfully I do not need chemo and will shortly have a two week course of radiotherapy. Has anyone got any recommendations on how to take care of the skin on my breast during and after the treatment?

Hi

I hope you are recovering well since your surgery. Regarding taking care of your skin during and after treatment we would suggest the following care for your skin around the area that is being treated.

Wash the area gently and ‘pat’ dry with a clean towel. Use simple non-perfumed soap and lukewarm water around the scar area. Avoid perfumed shower gels or deodorants. Avoid exposure to extreme heat such as ice packs or hot water bottle. Wear loose cotton clothing. On your first day there ask your nurse or radiation therapist are they happy for you to use a water based cream(aqueous cream)such as E45 and how often-it would usually be at least twice a day. Tell your team if your skin is getting red or sore. They can prescribe other creams/gels/ pain relief if necessary. Don’t shave or wax under your arm and don’t swim in chlorinated water. You will find when you start your treatment that your team in the hospital will be very supportive but if we can be of any further help do not hesitate to email our Nurseline at cancernurseline@irishcancer.ie.

Kind regards
