Referral to Breast Clinic

Last reply: 11 November 2011 07:36

Hi there,
My GP has referred me to the breast clinic in Beaumont Hospital, how long should it take for an appointment to come through?
Would I be better to go privately to the Mater?
Many thanks

Hi there,

You should not have to wait too long for an appointment, maybe a week or so. What consultant in the breast clinic has your GP referred you to as there are a few? I have been in treatment for Breast Cancer since Feb and attend Beaumont. I cannot praise and thank them enough for all they have done for me. The standard of care has been exceptional and when I was first diagnosed, it was all done very quickly, scans organised etc so no waiting around.
I know you are probably feeling very anxious at the moment. If you have not heard anything from Beaumont by the end of the week, give one of the secretaries a call, they are lovely and more than willing to help.
Best of luck and remember that most breast lumps are benign so try not to worry too much

Thanks Shinners, trying to stay positive, but sometimes not so easy! All I know at the moment is that she was referring me to the clinic, no idea which consultant. Hopefully i won't have to wait too long, but I will ring at the end of the week if I haven't heard anything.

Best of luck and thanks for taking time to reply.

If you've been referred as urgent they should see you inside 2 weeks, if not urgent then 6 weeks. I have been in treatment in Beaumont since Jan & like Shinners I cannot praise them enough. I wouldn't advise going private just yet until you have had your triple assessment results. Breast Care nurse will advise you on how best to proceed then. Best of luck with it & let us all know how you get on.

Funnychick, thanks for the reply, I'm not sure if it was an urgent referral, funny how you don't ask these questions. I don't have VHI, but do have HSF, which would cover the cost of the Mater Private for triple assessment, but nothing else. My gut feeling is to wait for Beaumont.

Best of luck and I'll let you know how things go.

Hi bsj,
beautmount is excellant. The staff are great and are so helpful and kind. The breast care nurses are so helpful and work really hard with their patients. i was only waiting 3 weeks for my first app. The staff will tell you to take someone with you which i strongly advise. good luck and take care of yourself.

Hi
Waiting is the worst part of all. I went to see surgeon about 3 weeks after the letter was sent to beautmont. I didnt tell anyone except very close family and it wasnt easy. thankfully I had someone to talk to and kept everything normal as possiable. Over a year later I have climbed over the mountain and now I cant believe I have done it. Image removed.
Keep in touch and I will be saying a prayer for you

I know they try to get anyone maked "urgent" an appointment within 2/3 weeks so hang on in there. Prof Hill is the main man there and he is brilliant. You will be well looked after. Make sure you bring someone with you as they will more than likely send you down for a mamogram and an ultrasound. If they think it is "suspect" they may also do a needle biopsy ( it doesn't hurt, honestly) Also be prepared for a long day so a book or magazine to keep you mind off things may be in order. It is a very busy and slow clinic due to the nature of it so be warned.
Keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We will be there for you x

Appointment came in the post this morning, for the Mater, Mr Stokes, thought the GP had said Beaumont. Was at the GP last Thursday and appointment is for Wednesday.

Thanks for the words of support, and my thoughts and prayers are with you all. I'll let you know how I get on.

Hi there,
Just to update following appointment, had exam, mammo, ultrasound and biopsy. Found cyst on one side and fibroidenoma on other, which has been biopsied. Ultrasound showed nothing sinister according to radiologist, the biopsy is just to be 100% sure, but have to go back for results in 10 days. The lump I was concerned about didn't show on ultrasound, so still unsure what it is. So feeling a lot relieved, but still a bit anxious.!

Thanks for all your help and best of luck to those going through treatment.

BSJ,

I'm delighted you got seen to so quickly. I had my triple done at the Mater and they were lovely( I also had my surgery there as well and they were perfect). Wishing you blessings in everything and thanks for the update.
