Platelet low....

Last reply: 13 May 2013 13:27

I went today to get my chemo and was told my platelets were low. Not low enough thankfully to stop chemo. But I am thinking now if there is anything I can do. Have to go back to hospital in 10 day to get bloods done again . To c what is the story.
Feeling good cold seems to have not come one me. Thank god.

Hi Superwhy,
I too had problems with low platelet counts while on chemo. Once they delayed my chemo for a week but other times they were not low enough to delay the chemo. I had day ten bloods tests after every session. I wasn't advised on what to do to try rectify the problem so I didn't do anything other than maybe rest a bit more, but that was not on medical advice so maybe that didn't have any real effect. When your on the chemo road blood counts are so important but you are so well monitored and if they have any doubt as to whether your well enough for the next round they won't go ahead with it.

I have had unexplained low platelets since my first child born in 2003, they told me there is nothing they can doas long as they did not get to low , starting chemo in couple of weeks so they just said that they would have to keep closer eye on them because I'm starting off from lowered baseline.

Thanks. I was hoping there was something I could do to help it along.
Have my blood tests on Tuesday so hoping they are ok.
Feeling good otherwise.

Am with the other girls unfortunately it's the effects of the chemo, I got neulasta injection to help & also from 3rd chemo on blood transfusions with each chemo. Neulasta caused awful bone pain though, if I'd had a choice I'm not sure I'd have taken it.

Good luck with blood tests.

Have been getting that neurolasta injection since I started chemo . So far thankfully haven't suffered from bones pains...
It was 79 on Friday. I am wondering how low it has to go before they do an infusion..
Someone recommended wheatgrass shots to be... But I need to check with hospital. They said nothing u can do..

Hi,

Neuralasta boosts the production of white blood cells which are used to fight infection.

Platelets on the other hand help the blood to clot quickly to avoid a lot of blood loss after a cut. Not sure there is anything that boosts the production of platelets.

Hope this helps

They can give you a platelet transfusion to boost them , mine are sometimes low at about 80,but doctor says nothing to worry about .I am due to start chemo in about 3 weeks ,, oncologists happy to proceed ,she said that she would keep close eye on them . Mine went as low as 40 when pregnant ,lots of things I could not have (like epidural)! ( c_section ) was to be avoided as well. Anything that causes bleeding should be avoided even trips to the dentist .
