Mastectomy on tuesday

Last reply: 11 June 2010 19:54

Im heading in for a mastectomy on tuesday, so I have a week to prepare myself. Mentally I am as prepared as I can be, so Im looking for practical advice.
I know flo had a long list of what to bring in for a mastectomy, but I cant find it.
Just practical things that i might not have thought of...ie front buttoning pj's, pins for drains...etc.

Hi Hugs,
So its next Tuesday then, well sure best to get it over with eh? I didnt have a masectomy, just lumpectomy with node clearance. I found a Nintendo DS a great distraction for the night in before the surgery. I played touchmaster, kinda like patience or poker, card type games anyway. I couldnt concentrate on reading but the DS was great. Played a bit after the surgery too. Anyway its not everyone's cup of tea but it was great for me.
Do you have a decent phone? My Hubby found out that I could have internet access for 99cents a day with vodafone live, I picked out a weekend break away while I was in the hosp, ha ha.
Other things I brought are:
Hand cream
Nail file
Spare front opening pyjamas
Slippers
Dressing gown
Shower gel
Teeth stuff
Magazines
Face cloth/sponge
Face cream
Radio/ headphones
Hope some of this helps.
Best of luck with Tuesday,
Celine

Hi Hugs
Good luck with operation, if I got through it you will too. I am in the breast clinic in Eccles St next Tuesday at 2pm. Are you going in Tuesday for op Wednesday ? if so maybe I could buy you a coffee and we could have a wee chat.

Here is a list of tips I was given by Flo:

- get button front PJs (u will prob be too sore to pull something over your head)
- bring a long shoelace so u can hang yr drains around yr neck while showering
- bring some safety pins (to pin your drains to your PJs)
- baby wipes, baby wipes, baby wipes
- bottles of water with sports tops
- make and freeze dinners beforehand
- use extra pillows (or V shape pillow) to support/cushion yrself
- stretchy vests or camis to gently support post op breast(s)*
- walkman, ipod, mp3 player to entertain yourself
- some people like silky or satin PJs cos it makes moving in bed easier
- fruit. veg and high fibre diet and or laxative to prevent constipation post op

[b:1b7kw33o]* not always possible as some surgeons want u to wear a non wire supportive bra[/b:1b7kw33o]

hi hugs,

just wishing you the very best of luck on tuesday, stay positive and
work with the team in the hospital. this helps a lots.

I would recommend some soft camis, and off course front facing pjs.
a good book, llight one, fruit, and talc, cools you down when u need
it along with your baby wipes.
best of luck to you, i will keep you in my prayers, you will be fine,
take care and mind yourself,
huggybear

Hi Kar,

Bumping this up for your info.

You will find some lists of suggestions on here regarding what to bring into hospital from a couple of the ladies who had lumpectomy and mastectomy.
