Im new here...Need some advice?

Last reply: 14 June 2014 21:32

My mom was diagnosed 6 weeks ago with breast cancer, and she had radiotherapy, that worked pretty well. She then had fluid in her lungs that needed draining. They drained that, but she then got a chest infection, which manifested into pneumonia. She's now on a ventilator and....I dunno, a shot in the dark, anyone else had this? Or any advice on the topic? Thanks

Sorry to hear about your mum.

You don't say what age she is but the diagnosis and fear might have run her down so to speak.

Radiation can cause some lung issues like scarring. I am no medic but I would NOT have thought chest infection / pneumonia would be a direct result of rads.

What are the medics saying??

Have you asked them what has caused this situation.

Hopefully ventilation is simply to help your mum out and to build up her strength.

I found writing down questions whenever I thought of them really useful so that when you get a few minutes with a doc you can be clear and precise with your questioning.

Hopefully you are being told all that you should be told but please ask direct questions if you feel you need to have answers.

Wishing your mum well.

That's a tough deal for your mum, and I can't imagine the worry and upset that you are going through.

I know that there are always things to be aware of when being treated for any type of cancer, but unfortunately I can't help you with your query as I didn't go through the same as what you mother is at the moment; maybe you got to have a look at some of the posts that are on this forum - you will see that no two people will have had the exact same experience/side-effects so it's hard for you to compare others to your mum.

I hope things get easier for you all, take care x
