Last reply: 29 March 2022 16:14

Hi
I am just wondering ,I have done 5/6 chemos (wasn’t given last as side effects were too much) had my first herceptin injection on Tuesday ,which was day after lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy . My question is can herceptin cause oral thrush? I suffered dreadfully with it during chemo and have it again now . Any advise greatly appreciated .

Dear Noddy

Thank you for posting on our online community. I am hoping you will get useful tips from others who have experienced mouth ulcers. Unfortunately yes Herceptin can also weaken your immune system and you may get ulcers as a result of being on it. Of course you have just been through chemotherapy and surgery and your body and its defense mechanism is tired. It would be great if with time and rest and following the mouth care recommended by your nurse that the mouth ulcers will lessen. It must be very sore and debilitating not being able to enjoy your food. Do speak to your nurse regarding treatment such as  anti fungal mouth drops, pastilles or a gel. You could be prescribed  a course of anti fungal tablets if your doctor  thought this was necessary.

I am sure when you had these ulcers the last time you tried all the usual suggestions like soft toothbrush/ alcohol free mouthwash. Use a gel mouth wash if necessary that will ‘line’ the inside of your mouth while you try and eat. It is very important to take pain relief before meals so that you can get adequate nourishment and fluids. Try to avoid spicy/salty/dry foods or citrus fruits. Bland diet like mashed potato, scrambled eggs etc ‘slip’ down easier. I’m sure you have picked up all of these tips the last time you had mouth ulcers but if you would like to phone our support line and speak to a cancer nurse we can discuss this further. Our phone number is 1800 200 700 and we are here Mon- Fri 9-5pm.

Kind regards
