hair thinning on meds

Last reply: 24 February 2014 22:13

Hi ladies

Haven't been on here for a while(although I do look in every now and then).Just wondering if anybody else has found that their hair is thinning while on meds?

I was on tamoxifen for 11 months and hair was fine ,switched to femara for 6 months couldn't take it any longer and am now on exemestane for the last 3 months.I have noticed that a patch of hair on my parting to the front has become very thin which is distressing me.Its as bit silly I know after all that we have been through but to me this is very noticeable(although probably not to others).

Has anyone any suggestions of supplements that may help?

Other than this slight hiccup life is good on the other side!! I will be 2 years finished chemo next month and will celebrate that date.

Good thoughts to all and thanks in advance
Xx

Hi Wilmaone,

Sorry I can't help you but I can symapthise. I am on Sutent for 2 months now and I have lost about 70% of my hair. I'm at my wits end.....have enough hair/fluff to cover up scalp but its getting scarce. I shouldn't go totally bald but there is enough gone to make styling my hair impossible. I'm wearing bands now.

I could be on these meds for the forseeable future so will probably have to get a wig. I'm, having major problems scourcing short curly ones that won't age me by 10 years!! I'm 48.

Would love to hear about other experiences with hair thinning.

Best of luck and I suppose our hair should be the least of our worries, but I feel your pain girl.

Hi wilmaone, I am on examesthane too (for last 4 years as part of a trial with ovarian supression) and have not had any noticeable thining. Did you talk to the onc about it?? I guess all drugs have side effects....

Hi Wilmaone,

I have seen on other sites that thyroid problems can be a reason for hair thinning so you might want to get that checked out.

Is going back on Tamoxifen a possibility if it turns out to be the medication?

Hoping you find a solution Image removed.

Thanks ladies

Yes spoke to once about it 2 weeks ago he did bloods to check thyroid as I have also put on a bit of weight.Haven't heard anything so take it all is OK on thyroid front.

I'm back in April for review as most of the side effects are dreadful bone and joint pain .if it gets any worse they will look ar t going back to tamoxifen .so fed up with nasty side effects!!!!

Shouldn't complain.

Good thoughts to all

Wilmaone,

I had joint pain for the first year, maybe 18mo. I started a Pilates class once a week and I noticed a BIG difference. Felt less like an 80 something year old and more like a 40 something year old. Examesthane is know to have joint pain as a SE!

Was there a particular reason you came off tamox? Given your age I would have thought it would have npbeen the drug of choice assuming SE's were tolerable.

Good luck. Keep bringing it up with your oncology team. After all you have been through this part of treatment should be relatively straightforward!

Thanks Lindylu

The joint and bone pain are not as bad yet as with femara and hopefully won't be as I couldn't walk by 6 months on it.

I was taken off tamox mainly because I was post menaupasal and it didntvagree with my head although I think looking back that may have been more the shock of it all hitting home.I will keep going till April and see how I go.I just hope the thinning doesn't get worse .
