Yes, they don't really explain about the nails! I lost half of each of my index and middle finger nails, it didn't really hurt but made picking things up from a flat surface impossible! My 2 big toe nails went black and lifted from the nail bed. They didn't fall off but I cut them right back as they kept catching on socks and tights. Also they started weeping clear fluid from behind the nail (sorry Image removed. ) I checked with the doctors as I was concerned they might get infected, but they weren't bothered, just said keep them clean!

I am 10 months out of chemo now and my toe nails have still not returned to normal and although the finger nails grew back every time they get anywhere they split so I keep them short. Worst is index finger of left hand which keeps slitting down the length and that does get sore.

I feel your pain. I lost my two big toe nails well after chemo finished. It was icky, but new nails were underneath. The main problem started when the new nails started to grow. I ended up with ingrown nails which got infected and I had to get antibiotics and spend a fortune on chiropody fees! As I always say chemo is the gift that just keeps on giving!

Yes,

happened to me, the two big toenails went & my fingernails were in shreds. Was advised by homeopathic GP to take a square of jelly a day as gelatine is very good for hair & nail growth, took it (am still taking it) & my hair & nails are really healthy now. Image removed.

Hi Deefed,
My nails are in an awful state and I'm three months finished chemo. It was actually about two months after chemo ended when my problems started. They became very sore and a brown and white colour and smelly Image removed. Showed them to my radiation oncologist as I was having radiotherapy at the time but he didn't seem too bothered about them. Felt a bit vain going in showing him my nails - this man was helping save my life and all I was worried about was my nails Image removed. but hey I'm a bit of a girly girl as they say Image removed. He gave me an antibiotic which didn't do an awful lot really, perhaps only made them less sore but they are still awful to look at but I keep a dark polish on them (maybe not the best idea I know) Hoepfully by the summer I will have hair and nice nails Image removed.

My toe nails are ok but in the last week two of my fingernails split half way down. God I thought when chemo was over it was meant to be going in the right direction

Hi Wicklowlady
I thought so too as the nails were decent enough throughout the chemo Image removed. Just shows that it must stay in our bodies for a long time.

Ahh Shirls, don't feel bad about showing the nails to the RT guy, I spent the whole 6 weeks of RT getting my toenail dressed daily by the RT nurse!! They joked about it being a beauty parlour but my poor toenail was hanging by a thread & they didn't want me to go to chiropodist while on RT, had forgotton all about that till poor deefed said about the nails!! Have lovely toenails now Image removed.
