Does anywhere do decent curly wigs???

Last reply: 24 January 2013 23:37

What a frustrating day....
Went to a load of wig shops and pretty much got the same answer. "you have lovely curls but we won't be able to match your hair"

Is there anyone out there who managed to get a decent curly wig. Am so fed up....

Ah don't be you'll get sorted. To think I haven't worn mine ten times since September. My bandanas are thread bare lol. Did you google? Are you going to give yourself the neulasta?

No, I'm afraid to coz the real thing may turn out to be a disaster.... It would be good to have the wig for going out at night etc.... But I just want to be me too. Everything they put on me today just looked and felt plain plain wrong!

I think I'm seeing a nurse for the first injection and then flying solo...

Well you have to be confident wearing it or you're wasting your money. You might get some tips on here as surely someone else has got a curly wig. Ah yes you do need one but don't dwell too much as you won't wear it as much as you think. Get someone else to learn how to give you the neulasta as a back up. I just couldn't give it to myself.

Neadi unfortunately I don't think you are going to get something to match exactly. A wig is a wig and it will never look or feel like the real thing.. From all the previous posts I don't think anyone was overly happy with their wig, it was just something used to blend in with the general public. It's just another sacrifice on the road to recovery. Definitely think you should get one and practice wearing it before you have to wear it. My practice day 2 became my real day 1 and I didn't feel like I had time to get used it.

Neulastin injections are fine, I gave them to myself with no trouble. It's a bit daunting at first but the nurses are really nice! Bit of bone pain for a day or two but nothing I couldn't handle.

Good luck with the wig hunt. I got mine in roches and found them fabulous!!

Thanks ania. Wide awake here although exhausted after the day of wig horror.

Less than 48 hours to go to nuking.....seriously worried and anxious now, and on top of that no bloody hair!

Dee suggested I try her guy, but all the places I went to today said the story would be the same wherever I went, but it's worth a shot......

Neadi give Roches in Kimmage a ring or Pink Ribbon in Cabinteely - they may be able to help.

Don't be fretting about Chemo enjoy today and tomorrow will take care of itself. Bring someone with you and chin up chicken. I was terrified wanted to cry the whole time. They are so
nice in Vincents you will be find. Added benefit seasoned campaigner Dee is there on that day!

Good luck

Neadie you're fretting before the event. You need to relax or you won't get through this as easy as you could. I got my wig in pink ribbon in cabinteely and while it's really good and people have mistaken it for my own hair you are never going to think its your hair nd all the women are the same here so that's something you're going to have to live with no point in stressing over it.

Hi Neadi

My heart is going out to you. It is all very daunting but believe me once you are into your new routine you will get somewhat used to it and will begin to listen to your body and will know your good and bad days and can then plan to do things on the good days. I nealy passed away peacefully when I was told I would have to inject myself. Am a very squemish person but to be honest once I did it once I was grand. I used to bring the injection to my sisters and we would wait for my niece to come home from school and then we would have the " injection ritual" . We used to all have a bit of a laugh about the hype of the whole thing. Neulasta did its job for me as I sailed though chemo with no infections at all so I was very thankful for it. I did get bone pain but a few painkillers - neurofen and I was aok.
With regard to the wig, have you tried Hairspray? They have now opened a new dedicated wig centre for people going though chemo so they may have some curly wigs. Everyone else is right in what they are saying, it will never look or feel like your own hair, but it acts as a protection if you dont want the general public to know what you are going through.
If you are feeling very anxious, tell them in oncology, they can give you some calmers to help you. Also it may be worth your while contacting a Cancer Support Group like Arc or if you are north county Dublin, the Gary Kelly Centre in Drogheda. I attend there and it has been a complete lifeline to me.

We are all thinking of you and sending lots of love and light

Hi Neadi,

you've brought back the memories... I couldn't even get the same colour, never mind style so i went for a wig that was very different from my colour & style but it really suited me. When the wig was ready I got the girl to shave my head, put the wig on & went down to my Mum's & told her I'd had my hair re-styled to match that wig that I was going to get & she swallowed it, about a half an hour later I had to tell her that this was the wig & she didn't believe me, I'll never forget her face when I took it off, so that's how good it looked. I was very paranoid at first but after a (male) neighbour & my local butcher were both very complimentary about my new hairdo I realised nobody noticed it was a wig, it was all in my head...enough said. Good luck with your selection. I was caught on the hop as was told my hair won't fall out till 2nd chemo, it started to fall out heavily a couple of days after the 1st so was in a panic to get it....Take care. A Image removed.

Oh that's good you're getting your wig sorted and like myself you may embrace the hats more. I forget what it's like to have hair. Do you take steroids before you start chemo? I felt no different taking the steroids just that I didn't vomit, because of them.

Roches have some great little cotton hats that are good for sleeping in when your head gets cold and for pulling on in bad days! I bought loads of scarves in penny's with great intentions of tying them up nice-none ever made it to my head (hats were easier for me) wish you better luck with them than me!

I have been reading posts here throughout my journey but only joined this week!
I have always had long hair and was uncomfotable without it. Although not the same as my own hair I have lived in my wigs both in and out of the house! The first wig I got in Limerick was curly, but far too short so I resorted to the internet and have had 2 wigs sent from the UK each costing less than €100 including delivery to ireland and they are the same make as the ones I was shown here for €400 - I took a bit of a chance on the colour but I was delighted with both and have received many complements. If you aren't happy with the one you got, or just fancy a change during your treatment look up simplywigs.co.uk or hothair.co.uk. (or many other UK suppliers) The best one yet is the one I just got as you can style it with low heat curling tongs! it is a Raquel Welch Heat Friendly wig and is listed at £260

Hi guys!!

Yes a noticeable absence! I have to admit weekend 1 was far from easy- the anti sickness drugs just didn't work and spent fri sat and Sunday completely floored. Hospital had to fax stronger anti sickness drugs down, but even then could only stomach toast.

Monday and Tuesday was very very tired, but managed ti get out fir short strolls, and today managed to drive for 40 mins! The joy!

I'm going to have to sort out the sickness meds, but apart from that it's going ok.

You all set for op Mary?? How long will you be in for?

Oh good to hear you're doing ok now neadie and they'll get your meds right as they don't like you being sick. You should be ok now until your next one.

Yes all set have a nice new silk pink pj's and cream sleeping cap. I've to be in for 8am then I've to trot down to daycare oncology in my new pjs to get my herceptin then I have my op at 2.30pm and ill be home on Tuesday. My local musical society has asked me to sing in the pits for their panto the following weekend. I'm usually threading the boards at this time first time I haven't done it in 17 years. So it's nice to be involved.

Hi Neadi,

I also got a couple of the fringes at Roches to wear under the hats and scarves and they really give a much more natural look - adn are confiortable to wear.

I also discovered this website http://www.headcovers.com which has a great range and while the company is based in the US - my order only took 3 days to be delivered - was really impressed! Image removed.

I ordered a few more hats and another bob style half wig to wear under hats - it was only $39 - and looks great!
It's good to have a few different looks as was getting bored quickly with the few hats that I had and I still am only wearing the wig on special occasions - much prefer the hats and fringes. Good luck with it all!

Not too bad. Still a bit woozy and the bottom of my throat is quite sore...gargling to beat the band and keeping an eye on the temp which seems to be fine.

Maybe I'm asking too much to be almost normal after a week, but it's annoying not being able to do my normal things. But hey we're one week closer to the finish line!!

Are you using the bioextra gargling mouthwash and mycostatin that you swallow twice a day? I never got any blisters at all and I got a bit lax as it went on, always did it the week after chemo though.

Oh I think normality goes out the window when you're in chemo land. Are you in every two or three weeks? As I say you do what your body tells you and there will be a time when you can do stuff but you have to be so careful not to pick up anything as you'll end up in hospital like me.

Hi Neadi
Sorry I havent logged in for a few weeks and didnt know you were looking for a curly wig. I had the same problem. I had very tight curly hair and got the same answers as you. In the end Roches ordered in one. I didn't like it at all at first because it is no way as curly as my own was but it's been great for letting me blend in with the crowd. BTW, Roches will style it for you, included in the price. The one I got was 470 euro including a shampoo, a conditioner and a beeswax cream. You prob need the shampoo and conditioner but I never used the beeswax.
Because of the ridiculous price, I tried to order a spare on ebay which looked lovely on the pic but looked like rats tails when it arrived! Should have known 14 euro too good to be true!
Good luck with the wig. I got used to mine completely but it does take time. I have a small bit of hair now but still way too short to bare.
And good luck with the chemo.

Has your hair fallen out yet neadie? If you're like me the wig will sit on the dressing able for the duration I don't like wearing it. I'd say I've worn it less than ten times, just so artificial. I have some hair growing back nothing major but it's a good sign. The foreseeable wont be that long you'll get used to it trust me. I nearly forget what it's like to have hair and that's the truth.
