DCIS

Last reply: 15 September 2021 22:33

Hi all, I was diagnosed with DCIS 10 years ago. I had 2 surgeries to remove it. Then I had my radiotherapy 30 sessions. Everything went like clockwork. Then my husband started having heart problems. Well long story short I start looking after him. This all happened at the same time as my surgery. Anyway I'm on a waiting list for reconstruction as I'm lopsided. Where would I get the bras and prosthetics. I can't wear anything tight. Thank you and I wish you all well on your journey.

Hi Dilly

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear all that you have been through in the last 10 years including caring for your husband. I hope you are both doing ok. Regarding bras and prosthesis, I would suggest you contact my colleagues in our Daffodil Centre closest to you for their information regarding mastectomy fitters & suppliers near your area. Before you decide what prosthesis to get you might try and speak to the breast reconstruction nurse on the team where you will have your surgery, for her advice also depending on how soon your surgery will be.

Do phone us if you would like to discuss this further at 1800 200 700. We are all cancer nurses here, Mon- Fri 9-5pm.

Kind regards

Cancer Nurse

Hi Dilly
I hope things improve for your husband and yourself.
It is my understanding that you should get 2 post surgery bras each year via the HSE. As well as talking to the breast reconstruction nurse, it might be useful to talk to a nurse from the team where you originally had your surgery. They may be able to advise on the prosthesis as well. Having said that, I didn't find the bras or prosthesis available through the HSE suitable for me. The prosthesis was very heavy. I sourced a foam prosthesis which was much lighter via Marks and Spencer and I much prefer it. They have nice bras too which had a greater range of designs and colours than via the HSE.
Best of luck with your surgery.

Thank you so much. I didn't know any of this. I just hope I haven't left it too late to apply. I'm going to ring tomorrow.
