Applying for jobs ... do you say you've had cancer or not

Last reply: 27 May 2014 16:41

Any opinions ladies.
Am planning on a return to work to a new job. Starting the application process now but there is a hole in the CV due to cancer. Do you mention it or not. Feel like no one will touch you with a barge pole when you are in remission from cancer....

It's a tough one. While I would say they shouldn't judge as many people recover from cancer but I know what you're saying. Say you decided to spend time with your chile IF they ask you

Hi Dane, I agree with Wicklow Lady, I would find another way of explaining the hole in the CV IF they ask - which they probably will.
If you were still receiving treatment that could potentially interfere with your commitment to your employer, it would be relevant for them to know. If not, I would argue it is none of their business.

Good luck with the interviews!

Hi Dane
I went for an interview last year for a place in college - they mentioned the gap in my CV & I just said it was due to personal reasons; didn't elaborate & I got my place. I suppose I felt I had done enough talking about cancer when I was being treated & this was a whole new exciting chapter in my life & didn't want the pity looks & conversation that goes with it when saying I was previously treated for cancer.

Very best of luck Dane, I'm so excited for you x
