Patience is what you need and loads of it. Mine was straight long bob before treatment, now I have curls but it has settled down a bit as in the summer I resembled Michael Jackson before he went white!! Couldn't get a fringe or a parting for love or money it was so curly. Now thankfully I now have a fringe and a parting. It's good to have hair but the first growth is very coarse and wirey as well as been curly but I won't complain as I had none last year. Finished chemo a year ago tomorrow. Happy new year

Hi Superwhy,

As Wickow Lady said, you need lots of patience while regrowing your hair.

Before treatment I had a natural kink but my regrowth was much curlier than before. I finished chemo at the end of January 2013 and it's only in the past month that I have a side parting. It was only as my hair got longer and thicker that I could blow-dry my hair and get rid of the curls. I haven't coloured my hair yet and need to do something early in the New Year.

It was a difficult and annoying time while my hair was growing back, but on the other hand I suppose I was happy to have my own hair on my head.

Congrats to you Wicklow Lady on your 1 year milestone. Hope you had a glass of bubbly to mark the occasion. Good on you for still coming online and offering support to people.

Happy New Year to all BC forum readers and contributors.

Headin back to work part time in feb. Am a bit worried how I will cope but needs must.
My hair is really thick but it always was. I got it cut just before Christmas and it defo seems to have helped gettin I growin again. Also got a colour put it. As well as curly it's grown back with a lot of grey.

Katykaty you can get a non ammonia colour in anytime. I got one a week after I showed it to the world. Yes it does grow back coarse I think it needs a good few cuts to get rid of it. I've had very little cut off mine so it's curly. Not my favourite style but it's a lot better than the Michael Jackson look lol . Well done ladies I'm a year finished chemo so things are good and I finished herceptin in August. I did miss the nurses for a while, you get attached

Hi ladies butting in here. 9 months on and Whacko Jacko could have been my twin. Question is only got it cut once (was really just a trim). Do you reckon I should get the whole curl cut out would that be better and have a better chance of going straight? (lol that's my hair I mean)!!

Mine too SuperWhy is a little coarser but not much got a dye in hairdressers as was a few greys that went well there are new non ammonia products out there.

Ladies I really just cant stand my hair it drivers me loopers!!! would prefer short back and sides pixie luck

You know what think I will go ahead and get all the curls cut off Saturday and see what happens? Image removed.

You're about a month behind me Dee and if you persevere mine is actually not too bad now . I have a parting and a fringe and it's much longer and it's dragging out the curls. It's a bit of an endurance and I agree pixie look is much better but I like long hair so I'm sticking with it for the moment. We didn't have this problem last year !!! Lol

Okay maybe I should persevere but I am going to keep my hair short moving forward. Mine at the moment is very like what yours was at the benefit night but a bit shorter. I would treat myself to getting it blow dried once a week but the buggers come up again after one night sleep Image removed.

Ha ha you're funny. Yes they bounce right back up. Well that was five months ago nearly but if you're not going to go long again you could get it cut but I like the length in it. I can pull my hair down beside my ear and it reaches my jaw bone, not bad

I finished chemo at the end of January last year and from about May onwards I had my hair trimmed / thinned-out every 6 - 8 weeks. This was really necessary because my hair was growing upwards and by going every 6 - 8 weeks to the hairdresser this really kept my hair in shape. I still had the curls but they were a lot more manageable and since the beginning of December I have a side parting and am able to blow-dry my hair straight.
What I found very useful was a double vent hair brush that my hairdresser gave me.

Hi Everyone,

Can I jump in here? Although I don't have BC I am on oral chemo for secondary liver tumors.

I just want to check if any of you have really curly hair - as in very tight curls to the root. My hair is thinning alot and I am going to be on treatment for the foreseeable future and while I don't expect my hair to go completely it is getting very thin and there may be no regrowth.

Its a nightmare trying to get a wig as there doesn't seems to be many options for curly girls. Any recommendations. The thinning is like a slow torture and to cap it all (no pun intended!!!) I wasn't expecting it as its not the norm for the treatment I am on (Sutent). Started Dec 10th.

I am a bit conservative and don't think I would have the courage to go for something too different............maybe I should..........decisions decisions!!

Anyway girls wishing you all the best. It sounds like yee have all kept your sense of humour and its great that you are all at the other side of your treatments. This is the first time I have posted about my cancer which was first diagnosed nearly 6 years ago with a bowel tumour. Must make more use of these boards.

Take care
Tara

Was your hair long or short? I had long curly hair and had quite a job finding a wig to suit, but after a couple I wasn't entirely happy with I did get a "Natural Image" wig from their Raquel Welch range. The one I eventually got could even be styled with curling tongs!!

There are Irish suppliers of these, very expensive if you have to pay yourself but free if you have medical card, not sure about health insurance. They can also be obtained from the UK much cheaper via mail order, just google as there are a number of suppliers who stock different ones.

Best of luck,

Karen

Thanks Karen. My hair is shoulder length but so thick that I usually keep it tied up.
I have searched online and just can't see anything remotely like it apart from the afro wigs which would be the wrong colour and shape.
I spoke with a lady today from the wig clinic and I have an appointment next Wednesday so fingers crossed. I have considered going to London for a look but I'd need to do a bit of homework first and see where I should go.

I will look at the natural image website that you recommend.

I still have enough of my own hair at the moment but not sure what the next few weeks have in store for me

I'm just hoping that the treatment has the same effect on my tumors as it's had on my hair! I have been very lucky in that I tolerate the drug very well and most people don't even know that I am sick. I can do everything I want to do. The only thing that I miss is swimming which I have not been able to do as it probably wouldn't be good for my remaining hair.

Anyway thanks again. I will keep you posted.
