Waiting for results

Last reply: 15 November 2023 21:57

Hi, I had a mammogram last Tuesday, was called back in less than a week later, had another mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. I've got an appointment with consultant in 11 more days to "discuss where we go from here". 11 more days is a long time wondering and waiting. It sounds to me like the doctors know something, could this be the case ? And they are just waiting for the biopsy to confirm? I was told to bring someone with me on the 15th when they called with the appointment. Every day feels like forever while I'm waiting. Is it normal practice to be told to bring someone with you?

Hi clare81,

Thank you for your post.

It is always a very anxious time when waiting on results.

The results of mammograms and ultrasounds require very little time for reporting but a biopsy has to go through different stages in the laboratory.

Most hospitals will ask you to bring someone with you when getting results, this had stopped during Covid but it is mostly back in place again.

If you would like to speak with a nurse to support you through this anxious time we are available on 1800 200 700 Mon-Fri 9am-6pm.

Kind Regards

Cancer Nurse

Hi Clare,

I don't have any information for you. I wanted to respond in solidarity.

My testing journey is just beginning and it's a frightening time.

I have been telling myself that every day is a gift no matter the challenges that face us. It's helping. Maybe it will help you too.

The best of luck to you x

Hi Clare81,

Thank you for your post.

I am sorry that you are waiting so long for your results, these last few days must have been a very anxious time for you. Unfortunately, it does take time for the histology results to be processed.

I do hope that your appointment goes ok today. If you would like to speak with one of our cancer nurses at any stage, please contact the Support Line on 1800 200 700, Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Kind regards,

Cancer nurse

Thank you for your message, unfortunately I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular breast cancer this morning. An MRI on Tuesday is the next step. I feel strangely calm now that I know. I'm sure that could all change. I will no doubt be onto your helpline in the next few days as the news sinks in. Will feel better when I know my treatment plan, so some more waiting for now.
