Play therapy

A type of therapy for children that aims to help them understand and deal with difficult feelings and upsetting situations.

What is play therapy?

This is a type of therapy that uses play to help children who may be going through a difficult time. Play is a natural form of expression and communication for children, so this type of therapy allows children to better understand and deal with upsetting feelings and difficult experiences, such as being diagnosed with cancer.

Play therapy can involve the use of different toys and materials, such as dolls, sand trays and play dough.

It is usually provided to children aged between 3 and 12 years.

How does play therapy help?

Play therapy can help your child in many ways, including:

  • It can help them to make sense of difficult experiences by providing them with a safe space to express their feelings
  • It can help them to deal better with difficult feelings, such as anger. This in turn can make them more resilient
  • It can reduce anxiety
  • It can increase their self-confidence
  • It can help to develop their social skills, such as taking turns and sharing with others

How can a child avail of play therapy?

The Irish Cancer Society funds play therapy that is provided by the charity, Hand in Hand. This is available for children aged between 3 and 12 years who have been diagnosed with cancer. It is also available to the siblings of children diagnosed with cancer.
