HRCI-HRB Joint Funding Scheme 2025

Introduction

We are pleased to announce that the Irish Cancer Society is accepting applications as part of the HRCI-HRB Joint Funding Scheme 2025.

The Irish Cancer Society is a member of Health Research Charities Ireland (HRCI). The HRCI which was founded in 1998 with the aim of supporting charities in Ireland to increase both the quality and quantity of healthcare research being done in Ireland. The HRCI represents the joint interests of charities specialising in restoring health through medical research, diagnosis and treatment and, where possible, the prevention of disease.

The HRCI-HRB Joint Funding Scheme aims to fund researchers and research teams to conduct internationally competitive and innovative research in areas of strategic relevance to each charity. HRCI-HRB awards are up to a maximum total award value of €300,000 for projects with a duration of 12 - 36 months.

At this stage, the Irish Cancer Society will run our own Expression of Interest (EOI) call to determine our selected applicants. The full timeline is shown at the bottom of the webpage and guidelines for the full applications will be uploaded on our website soon.

Theme and Eligibility

The theme for the Irish Cancer Society’s call as part of the HRCI-HRB Joint Funding Scheme is Translational Biomedical Research – Areas of Unmet Need in Cancer.

Translational biomedical research can be defined as “bench to bedside” or patient-focused research. The aim of this research is to translate existing knowledge about cancer biology into techniques and tools that will accelerate progress towards patient benefit. Translational research improves the translational potential of basic biomedical discoveries through pre-clinical testing.

Applications must focus on cancers with significant challenges and unmet needs, addressing one (or more) of our three strategic priorities for this call:

1) cancers in which there are significant challenges in terms of outcome (i.e., metastatic cancers, rare cancers, poor response or poor outcome cancers)

2) cancers affecting children, adolescents and young adults

3) research which seeks to improve outcomes amongst traditionally underserved communities

In particular for this call, we welcome applications that utilise novel and innovative technologies such as the use of big data and AI, as well as new tools and treatment regimens including next generation sequencing, liquid biopsies, and immune-oncology.

Additionally, it is imperative that the research project has strong Public and Patient Involvement (PPI) from the onset and throughout. Research projects that do not have PPI will not be funded. Please see here and the below appendix for more information.

Please note, the Society is accepting translational biomedical applications only. Examples of research projects that will not be funded include:

  • Discovery/ basic research
  • Survivorship research
  • Clinical trials
  • Radiology-based cancer screening projects
  • Prevention programmes
  • Projects that intend to fund Ph.D. researchers
  • Translational biomedical research projects that have any of the above elements

You can be a lead applicant on one project and a co-applicant on another, but we will not accept EOIs from the same lead applicants. Please email grants@irishcancer.ie if you are unsure about your project eligibility.
