Symptoms of cancer of unknown primary (CUP)

The symptoms of cancer of unknown primary (CUP) can include:

  • Feeling tired or weak
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • A cough that won't go away
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Unexplained pain 
  • Breathlessness
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Swollen abdomen (tummy area)

All these symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer, but it’s important to go to the GP and get any unusual changes checked.

Can I be screened for cancer of unknown primary (CUP)?

Testing for cancer when you have no symptoms is called screening. There is no national screening programme for CUP in Ireland. 

If you’re worried about any symptoms, go to your GP.
