We provide a home nursing service called Night Nursing. Night Nurses provide night time care for patients and their families in their own home. They can provide extra support to you and your loved one during what can be a difficult and anxious time.

Mary, an Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse

Night Nurses support you

The Irish Cancer Society's Night Nursing Service is available so that you and your loved one will receive nursing care, practical support and reassurance. Your Night Nurse will work with you to give your relative or friend the highest standard of nursing care and ensure their comfort and dignity throughout the night.

The Night Nurse will sit with relative or friend during the night, unless you request otherwise. The Night Nurse will attend from the twilight hours of 18.00 pm -23.00 pm & 23.00pm – 7am.

All the Night Nurses are An Bord Altranais registered, referenced checked and Garda vetted.

The Night Nurse will need a comfortable chair, adequate lighting and access to bathroom facilities.

How to book a night nurse

1)   Contact the health professional who is looking after your loved one - they need to make the request. Health professionals who can request a Night Nurse are:

  • Member of the community palliative care team
  • Member of the palliative care services in hospital
  • General practitioner, G.P
  • Public health nurse, P.H.N

2)   Once your health professional makes the booking, we contact a local Night Nurse, and arrange for the nurse to visit your family.

Unfortunately, we can't take Night Nursing bookings directly from you, but if you have any questions at all, please phone our Support Line on Freephone 1800 200 700 or email Although we try our best to provide a Night Nurse to all patients, occasionally when the service is very busy, we may experience a shortage of nurses and may be unable to provide one for your loved one.

In 2022, over 2,000 patients throughout Ireland used the Night Nursing service, with our Night Nurses providing more than 6,500 nights of care. Patients and their families tell us they feel more supported and reassured by the presence of an Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse. The Night Nursing service is free.

It’s thanks to the generosity of our wonderful donors, fundraisers and volunteers that we are able to provide services and support to ensure nobody in Ireland has to face cancer alone.

We rely on your generous donations to help fund the Night Nursing service, in addition to our life-changing cancer research projects and vital support services.
