Returning to work after a cancer diagnosis
We believe cancer survivors should be supported in their return to work with employers and the Government doing more to reduce barriers to a positive return.
One in two of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetimes. Thankfully, many people survive their cancer diagnosis and want to plan their future. Returning to work is an important step for many.
Our research
In 2021, the Irish Cancer Society funded the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) to conduct research exploring the experience of those returning to employment following a diagnosis of cancer in Ireland.
A questionnaire was completed by 377 people diagnosed with cancer since 2010 (and aged between 18 and 65 and in formal employment at the time of diagnosis) about their experience of returning to employment after their diagnosis.

Research findings
A supportive environment helps with a return to work
The ESRI research revealed a broadly positive picture, with almost 7 in 10 patients and survivors saying their manager or organisation was supportive of them in their return to work.
But cancer survivors reported some challenges
Despite many people reporting a positive experience, there are barriers, including returning to work before being ready due to financial need, negative impact on career prospects and other negative experiences such as a reduction in salary/bonus or unsuitable workloads.
What should the Government do to support workers?
- Broaden the Partial Capacity Benefit criteria to increase security for those with a previous cancer diagnosis seeking to return to work.
- Introduce a new statutory payment for employees and self-employed people with chronic illness to attend medical appointments rather than being forced to take unpaid leave.

Our Welfare and Supports team can advise on benefits, social welfare entitlements, medical card applications, community support, legal entitlements, childcare and more.
