Open Calls for Applications:

1. Research Scholarship Programme

Do you have the enthusiasm and ability to join the Irish Cancer Society Research Scholarship Programme and make a valuable contribution to cancer research?

This new four year programme involves completing a cancer research project, general and cancer-specific training and the opportunity to gain experience at national and international research institutions.

Applications in the areas of Epidemiology, Prevention, Laboratory, Clinical, Translational and Health Services Research are welcome. Applications in line with our strategic areas, in prostate cancer and in other areas of cancer research are sought. Please note that all applications will be assessed equally on merit and awarded on excellence.

The Research Scholarship Programme is open to:
a) science graduates
b) medical graduates
c) nursing graduates and other researchers with less than five years post-graduate experience who:

  • have not registered, but propose to commence a PhD
  • have a minimum of a first or upper second class honours primary degree or equivalent

Applicants will need to choose a research area of specific interest for them and identify a suitable supervisor to collaborate with on writing the proposal.

The total value of the Irish Cancer Society Research Scholarship covering stipend, fees and materials will be up to €35,000 per year for a maximum of four years. Additionally, mobility funding of up to a maximum of €9,000 for travel to a national and an international research institution should be included in the application.

2. Research Fellowships

Are you committed to making a real difference to cancer patients through a career in cancer research?

Applications for Irish Cancer Society Research Fellowships in the areas of Epidemiology, Prevention, Laboratory, Clinical, Translational and Health Services Research are welcome. Applications in line with our strategic areas, in prostate cancer and in other areas of cancer research are sought. Please note that all applications will be assessed equally on merit and awarded on excellence.

The Research Fellowship scheme is open to:
a) untenured postdoctoral scientists
b) medical doctors in training
c) nurses and other researchers

who hold a doctoral degree, a further minimum of three and a maximum of five years research experience and a commitment to developing a career in cancer research.

Applicants will need to choose a research area of specific interest for them and identify a suitable mentor to collaborate with on writing the proposal.

The total value of the Irish Cancer Society Research Fellowship covering salary and materials will be up to €75,000 per year for a maximum of three years.
Applicants may also apply for mobility funding up to a maximum of €10,000 to travel to a national or an international research institution for up to a maximum of six months during their Fellowship.

3. Prostate Cancer Research Funding

The Irish Cancer Society is the largest voluntary supporter of cancer research in Ireland and is dedicated to promoting patient-relevant cancer research.

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in Ireland. Latest data shows that 2,859 new cases of prostate cancer were diagnosed in 2009. Men in Ireland have a 1 in 9 chance of developing this cancer during their lifetime.

The Irish Cancer Society is inviting applications for funding for prostate cancer research from suitably qualified groups and individuals active in basic, translational, population-based and health services research. Research proposals must be directly relevant to the challenges facing prostate cancer patients and clinicians (including prevention, diagnosis, treatment, patient care and quality of life).

Applications are sought for the following funding opportunity:

Prostate Cancer Research Projects

Proposals focused on prostate cancer research are sought.

  • Funding up to the value of €300,000 for clearly defined projects up to 36 months will be made available.
  • Smaller projects including those of 12 to 18 months duration are welcome.
  • It is important to note that the budget requested and award duration must reflect the scale and nature of the proposed research.

All applications will be assessed on merit and subject to competitive international peer review. Applications may be submitted for joint funding from the Medical Research Charities Group/Health Research Board joint funding scheme. Successful projects will commence in December 2012.

4. IARC-Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship for Training in Cancer Research

The Irish Cancer Society is delighted to announce a Postdoctoral Fellowship in cancer research with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), Lyon, France.

The IARC-Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship is an exciting opportunity for postdoctoral researchers who are Irish nationals and who wish to pursue a career in cancer research in projects with a focus on epidemiology.

The Fellowship is for a period of one year initially, with the possibility of an extension for an additional year subject to satisfactory appraisal. There is also a subsequent opportunity to apply for a “Return Grant” provided by the Irish Cancer Society to return to a position in Ireland with a salary for one year.

Candidates already working as a postdoctoral fellow at the agency during the six months preceding the application deadline or have already spent more than one year at IARC cannot be considered.
