FAQ

What is Heroes from Home?

Heroes from Home is a fundraiser where you can play games to raise funds to support the Irish Cancer Society’s services and research to help people affected by cancer.

How can I get involved?

Simply pick your timing to game – you can do it solo or get your pals online at the same time.

You can set up your JustGiving page and ask your friends, family and co-workers to sponsor you. There is no time limit, no limits on what game you play – just be sure to stay safe, active and hydrated while you game!

You can join our streamer Discord for questions, chat and support at https://discord.gg/g56xPQe

How do I add a livestream to my Just Giving page?

Adding your livestream to your JustGiving page is really simple and a great way for people to follow along as they donate! You can find a really easy to use guide here.

How do I add a Heroes from Home fundraising tool to my Twitch stream?

The JustGiving Livestream Fundraising tool allows you to link you JustGiving page to your Twitch stream, meaning people can donate to you seamlessly while they watch!

You can find out how to do that here.

I don’t live stream my games can I still take part?

Of course! We want everyone who loves gaming to take part and there is no need to stream your play to get involved.

How to spread the word about your fundraiser

Share your JustGiving link on your social media and tell your community what you are doing and why.

Let us know too – tag us on social media and use the hashtag #heroesfromhome

How do I disconnect Twitch?

Simply log into https://live.justgiving.com/ and click the "Clear Selection" button to disconnect your fundraiser from the stream overlay.

How do I fundraise?

Contact your friends, family and co-workers! Let everyone know, because if they don't know, they can't come watch, and in these days of uncertainty you never know what could be a hit!

You can leave a message on Steam, Discord, partner with other streamers, make a pinned post on social media, set challenges and give plenty of notice before the event to build hype.

Here's a list of fundraising tips we've found to be great help

Can I stream my event on Facebook or YouTube live streaming?

If you choose to use Facebook Gaming or YouTube Live as a streaming platform, or in order to complement or top up donations for your Game Heroes, please note we may not be aware of this fundraising activity.

If you raise money on Facebook or YouTube and want us to include you in the campaign, please get in touch; you can email fundraising@irishcancer.ie or send us a private message through social media.

Can I create my fundraiser on Facebook instead of JustGiving?

Facebook fundraising can be a great alternative to JustGiving, although you won't be included on the leaderboards and totals on the Heroes From Home homepage, and we may not be aware of your fundraising activity. That being said, if it works for you, you can contact us at fundraising@irishcancer.ie and we'll be able to include you in all our contact lists!

Can I share my JustGiving page on other social media outlets and if so, how?

You can use the “Share” button on your JustGiving fundraising page to share to your favourite social media platforms.

How do I connect my game play on xbox or playstation to my fundraising page?

Since the fundraiser is connected to your Twitch stream rather than your streaming device, it shouldn't matter if you're streaming from PC, XBox, Playstation, or any other device.

Can I take part as a family or group?

Become a Hero from Home by getting the whole family involved playing online games to help raise vital funds for people affected by cancer, and be amazed by the generosity of the gaming community!

It’s really simple:

  • Sign up and set your challenge.
  • Share your Just Giving page with friends and family
  • Connect it to your live stream
  • Play your chosen game
  • Stream the craziness

Can under 18s take part?

You must be over 18 to sign up to Heroes from Home. We would love to have families on board but adult supervision is a must.

Where does my money go?

The funds you raise will go directly towards helping support cancer patients and their families all over Ireland.

Need ideas to make your stream a success?

If you'd like to do something a little different for your stream, try some of the following ideas:

  • Viewers get to pick the next game if they donate
  • Playing a game genre you've never played before
  • A streamer vs. streamer speedrun event
  • 10 pushups per 10 euro donated
  • Fancy dress costume/themed stream
  • Tiered donation goals for any/all of the above

JustGiving has the donation alert capability to update your audience, and since donations go directly to JustGiving, you don't need to be an affiliated streamer to take part!
