Irish Cancer Society to fund remote counselling during coronavirus pandemic

The service will be available to adults and children who are affected by cancer who cannot access counselling services due to the coronavirus pandemic

The Irish Cancer Society is to fund remote counselling sessions for people affected by cancer who cannot access face-to-face counselling as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The organisation has developed a new model to ensure that those who are unable to access face-to-face counselling due to COVID-19 containment measures are able to access the care they need.

The Society is working with community cancer support centres to deliver this service, drawing on the skills of counsellors who provide this service in communities across Ireland.

Donal Buggy, Head of Services with the Irish Cancer Society said, “Counselling is an important tool for all cancer patients and their loved ones as they live with and beyond cancer.

“With many people now unable to access their usual counselling supports we have developed this new model to ensure people can get help as they need it.

“The service is available to all people diagnosed with cancer, as well as their carers and loved ones. It is also available for children through a play therapy model and also for teenagers using appropriately trained and vetted practitioners.

“Anyone who feels they need counselling support can contact our Cancer Support Line and if the service is suitable for their needs they will then be linked in with an accredited, experienced counsellor.

“We understand that this is an especially worrying time for those affected by cancer and their families. Our Cancer Support Line is also available to provide support, information and advice to people at this time.

“The Support Line is operating extended hours and is available from 9.00am-5.00pm Monday-Friday.

“People who have cancer related concerns and feel they may benefit from speaking with a counsellor should contact the Irish Cancer Society Support Line:  Freephone 1800 200 700 lines or email the Cancer Support Line:  supportline@irishcancer.ie
