Irish Cancer Society and the Irish Sun team up to launch #JerseyDay on Wednesday June 22

This year 22 June is Jersey Day. It’s the day Ireland play Italy in the European Championships in France and Ireland's best-selling daily tabloid, The Irish Sun, has teamed up with the Irish Cancer Society on a campaign to encourage people to wear their favourite jersey to work that day – and, in return, donate to charity.

The Irish Sun and Irish Cancer Society are asking people to wear their national or county colours with pride on Wednesday, June 22 and donate €4 to this worthy cause.

Company bosses are being encouraged to let staff wear their jersey to work and make a cash contribution. Whether it’s an Ireland shirt or your favourite team’s colours doesn’t matter – it’s all about taking part.

To get involved, simply text CANCER to 50300 to donate €4*.

The campaign will be called #JerseyDay on social media.

The Irish Sun will feature some of the many firms that will be encouraging their staff to take part in this remarkable event.

Kieran McDaid, Editor of The Irish Sun, said: “This is a bit of fun for an important cause. It doesn’t take much to wear your jersey to work – or to let your staff do so - but every cent donated will help the brilliant Irish Cancer Society in their fight against this disease which 40,000 people are diagnosed with each year.
“We hope that people and businesses across Ireland will join the Irish Sun and the Irish Cancer Society in getting behind Jersey Day Wednesday – it’s a great chance to do something for charity, and possibly get your photo in Ireland’s best newspaper.”

Mark Mellett, Head of Fundraising of the Irish Cancer Society, said: “One in three people in Ireland will receive a cancer diagnosis during their lifetime. As the national cancer charity, the Irish Cancer Society works to support cancer patients at every stage of their cancer journey by providing vital free services and funding life-saving cancer research. The Irish Sun’s Jersey Day Wednesday is a fantastic opportunity for the public to celebrate Ireland’s participation in the Euros while also supporting cancer patients nationwide.”

A host of celebrities will also endorse Jersey Day in the days leading up to the Ireland V Italy clash.
