Nails coming away

Last reply: 25 August 2012 22:00

Hi ladies

Quick question, big toe on my right foot has been black and lifting since second last chemo.Cleverly i managed to stub it yesterday and yes as painful as it sounds!!!Was in for herceptin today and assumed that they would remove it for me,as the whole nail is just attached at the cuticle now,but the registrar just gave me antibiotics and painkillers.Just wondering if anyone has had any problems with nails and if a chiropidist would do something?
I know this is a small complaint but i can barely walk and wearing shoes is a non starter.

Thanks

Hi Wilmaone

I lost the toenails on both of my big toes. The first one just fell off one day whilst I was pottering in the house and there was a new nail growth underneath it so it seemed fine. The other one fell off about a month later with tHE same new nail growth. About 3 months later my big toe started to really pain and I couldnt put shoes or socks on, it was also very red and angry looking. As it happened in between Herceptin days I went to my GP who told me it was ingrown and infected. Like you she gave me antibiotics and a letter to bring with me to the hospital as she felt it may need to be removed and that the hospital were best placed to do this. The oncologist took a look at it and said that they wouldnt go near it and he wouldnt trust general surgery in the hospital to treat it so recommended I go to a Chirpodist, which I did and she was fantastic. Was well used to dealing with people post chemo and she filed the nails at the side to make them grow straight. It was a bit painful but was delighted that she had managed to save the new nails and also gave my very tired and dry feet a good NCT!!! One of the toes is still a bit sore but I put savlon on it and it seems to be coming on ok. I am going back to her in a few weeks for a check up. I would defo recommend you go to a Chirpodist. I dont know where you live but I am in North County Dublin and if that is near you, PM me and I will give you her contact details.
Best of luck
