Dempsey's Dare

Friday, 9th September: The nation’s favourite breakfast show presenter, Ian Dempsey, this morning announced live on air that he is willing to get his first tattoo after being dared by thousands of listeners. But there’s one condition - the needle will not touch his skin until he raises €25,000 for the Irish Cancer Society.

Ian’s ink promise is all part of Today FM's Dare to Care, the station's new charity fundraiser.

Following on from its hugely successful Shave or Dye campaign which raised over €7million for the Irish Cancer Society, Today FM presenters and listeners have committed to taking on all sorts of wild and wonderful dares to raise much needed funds for cancer services and will continue to do so throughout September and October. Ian put it to the listeners of his breakfast show as to what his dare might be and they responded in their droves with all kinds of creative suggestions. But there was one dare that listeners kept coming back to – “get a tattoo Ian”! The breakfast presenter has no tattoos and at 55 years old, getting inked was not something he had considered. Ian has yet to confirm what tattoo he’ll go for and more importantly where on his body he’ll have it.

In the coming weeks, other Today FM presenters, including Anton Savage, Dermot & Dave, Matt Cooper and Louise Duffy will be forced to reveal what they’re prepared to do for ‘Dare to Care’.

People from all around the country have been signing up for dares in a bid to raise as much as they can in the fight against cancer. Many of those have lost a loved one to the disease, overcome cancer themselves and some are currently undergoing treatment.

As part of the fundraiser, Today FM has also invited all brides and bridesmaids to take part in Wedding Dress Wednesday on 21st September which will see women across the country wear their wedding or bridesmaid dress for the day. Ladies will show up to work in their bridal rig out and get sponsored in the process – Today FM has said the response to this particular dare has been massive!

Other listener dares to date include sky diving, adventure racing, mountain climbing and chest waxing! Today FM has created an ‘idea generator’ on Todayfm.com for those looking for daring inspiration.
